Just completed my 1st year in my PhD program, only to find that I may potentially be rejected for in-state tuition in the fall (my GTAship only pays out-of-state tuition for a year, so i'm potentially on the hook for a lot of $$ in the fall).

I have to prove that I came to my state to not just be a student, but establish long-term roots. Anyone have some general advice, or been successful in petitioning this crazy thing?

Your school/program should know what to do.

In my program, the out-of-staters accomplished this after the first year through the program director and their PI/lab. It was an easy process (once you know what to do).

I imagine this is state-dependent as well.

I know some of the traditional things that go a long way toward helping establish residency are 1. a lease 2. driver's license/car registrations/ ins. in the state 3. voter registration and then a few more bills couldn't hurt. What about maybe a phone number too? I just thought of that right now, though, so take it with a grain of salt. I know you may have already done all of this and then some, but I figured I'd tell you what I know just in case. Keep us posted!
