Hey!

O wow! I didn't expect many people to be in this program. I guess I'll be seeing you around :D Well I wanted to study environmental development and then eventually go into consulting and this program will allow me to do that. I have registered for classes, but some of the classes I wanted to take requires an "instructors signature"....so I don't know how that works. I haven't heard anything back from my temporary advisor yet either, in terms of course selection. How about you? Did you register? Are you doing the collaborative International Development Studies program as well?

Haha, I am just as surprised as you!

Sounds like we have similar interests. I like how this program is not simply economic development but also organization building that can be applied to many different areas. Since getting into CDE, I have done a lot more reading, thinking, and searching, and now have mini obsessions with economics, finance, and the role they play in this area. Currently, I am harboring fantasies of eventually working for the UN, World Bank, or the OECD. So basically I wish I hadn't been so focused at the time with working domestically (North America) and had followed up after a professor (now my temp adviser) mentioning IDS instead of dismissing it on the spot because it looks awesome! Does it take longer or do you take more classes in a semester? Which of the IDS courses in each category do you want to take?

As an international student still waiting for my visa, I am not supposed to register during this registration period, so I'll register during the Add/Drop in August. I was watching the classes fill up and was starting to sweat but the coordinator said there was no need to perspire for the program is here for us. What courses are you taking?

What'd you study as an undergrad?

The Economist has an interesting article about "green growth" and development in the current issue (in time for Rio I reckon). Also, in this issue they have a special report (fourteen pages!) on the melting of the arctic. Only the first five articles are free online unless you pay so choose wisely!

After JPMorgan Chase's recent $2billion trading flap, I was looking at their website and came across this: http://www.jpmorganchase.com/corporate/Corporate-Responsibility/environment.htm

In closing, I think this is an exciting time to be getting into this field!

Who else is out there heading to Guelph? What's your program, career interests and other basics?

Hi

Thanks for such a thorough reply! Those articles were very interesting! Thanks!

Yes, for IDS, you do have to take 4 extra courses..........1 in sociology/ anthropology, 1 in geography, 1 in economics and 1 in political science. The course requirements are actually listed on the graduate calendar 2012- 2013...here you go:

http://www.uoguelph.ca/registrar/calendars/graduate/current/pdffiles/calendar.pdf

It also lists requirements for our program as well. And you are right about the international part.........that is exactly why I wanted to take the collaborative program. I am still debating whether I want to the thesis option or the major paper option, have you decided yet?

As for my undergrad, I did a double major in human resources management and economics and a minor history. How about you?

P.S. A very warm welcome to Canada! :) You'll love it here :D

You're welcome!

Thanks for the link. I called the secretary for the IDS program and explained my interest, why I didn't apply before, and how I meet the course requirements for the program and she said yeah dont worry about it, you can transfer in to the program in the fall, which is what another student is doing. So good news.

So what courses are you taking this fall?

I asked my temp adviser this question and he said don't worry about it (I was). There are so many interesting courses that I can take if I do the major paper, but a thesis may be fun, you know, doing a big project and seeing it through. Also, I have no intention at this point to pursue a phd, so that is something I suppose I'll consider. What are your thoughts?

Sounds like a good match for these programs! I got a B.S in biology as well as environmental studies.

Thanks for the welcome! I've been several times and really enjoy it so far!

Are there any grad programs (related to biological sciences) at Guelph University where you secure advisors/P.I.s AFTER admission? Or does this apply to all grad programs in biology the other way round (I have to manage a P.I., then apply if they have space/funding)?

Thanks...

Hey Antanon82!

Sorry I just saw your message...I am not sure about biological sciences, you may want to contact that department !

For anyone that attends, can you talk about your experience with the school and the city? I'm looking to apply to the Applied Social Psych doctoral program. I'm originally from New York City, but have lived in South Florida for the past 8 years, so I'm used to a more city/urban feel. How is the campus in terms of tolerance? Is it diverse? Is the climate typically more conservative, or more liberal?

Thank you to anyone who can provide some insight!
