Albanski Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 could anyone calll rachel holskin and ask her when she expects replys from europe to be sent out. I called her enough times, I think she has heard enough of me.
gl Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 What is her number? I have yet to call and I'm dying to know if they'll be mailed today.
jadoreviie Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Howdy All, Congrats to all those who got good news! For those who are interested, by roommate heard back about the South Korea ETA position Monday. I am applying for a Hong Kong ETA and have heard nothing yet... if any other Hong Kong ETA applicant receives any news, please let me know! Thanks. The applicants for Hong Kong have not yet been approved by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB) and IIE can't send out notification letters until the FSB clearances have come through. They're hoping that the FSB will approve the Hong Kong candidates within the next 2 weeks or so. If you want to have more details, you can contact Jonathan E. Akeley (JAkeley@iie.org), the Senior Program Officer - Asia-Pacific, U.S. Student Programs Division, Institute of International Education.
MTrice Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 It certainly varies per country. I'm just going to wait it out. She's been quite pleasant via phone and email, so I'm just going to let her do her job at this point. -Michael
Albanski Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 I feel that the wait is incredibly long. I try to find ways to pass the time, but people always come up asking me if I got the Fulbright, so that definately does not help. I expect that some people may hear news this Friday-Monday. Thats what you can count on that every Friday-Monday good and bad news will be delivered. However the important question is, is it going to be yours?

sakari019 Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Hello everyone! I'm so relieved to find this forum - our own little support group in this awful waiting game! First of all, CONGRATULATIONS to those who have been accepted, that must feel SO great! And to those who didn't receive such great news - there's always next year, and even making it through round one is an accomplishment! I feel like I've been waiting forever too - I'm a finalist for a Spain ETA and I haven't heard back yet, but I go to college in Moorhead, MN (near Fargo) where it's been flooding and my neighborhood was evacuated last week. I double checked my application online and yep, I put my college house address in Moorhead on the application. So, needless to say, when I drive back there tomorrow I'll be racing to check my mailbox! It sounds like those from Spain have mostly already heard? Any other Spain ETAs in particular? And does anyone know - do all accepted Fulbright fellows attend the orientation in Washington D.C. prior to going to the host country? I know Spain requires a mid-September orientation in Madrid, but I wasn't sure if there was something else.

Thats what you can count on that every Friday-Monday good and bad news will be delivered. However the important question is, is it going to be yours? I keep getting a lot of people asking me, too... Only a few people from my college applied, and only two of us (that I know of?) made it through the first round. The other girl who I know that made it just heard back with an acceptance for a South Korea ETA, so other mutual friends keep asking if I've heard back yet! I'm hoping we all get the good news we're praying for!!! Good luck, mkurti098, and everyone else! Keep us updated!

I know Spain requires a mid-September orientation in Madrid, but I wasn't sure if there was something else. I'm curious, too. I will be abroad this summer until mid-August and don't want that to interfere with anything related to the Fulbright, especially considering orientations are generally mandatory. The Belgium ETA program only has 2 spots, so I'm hoping it's pretty flexible. So anxious to get any kind of information. I called Rachel the other day to change my mailing address, and she didn't say things had already been mailed out, so I'm guessing no news on Belgium ETA for at least a week.
waitingtohear Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Some countries don't have Washington DC orientations and just have in-country orientations. I know Brazil doesn't have a DC orientation. I'm not sure which other countries do and don't have them, but it says in the acceptance letter.
westvirginiatulsan Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Thanks jadoreviie, I guess that means I should just relax for a while longer... As far as people asking about the DC orientations go, I asked Jonathan Akeley a couple of months ago about it for the Hong Kong ETA position and it does not exist. If I remember correctly it sounded like the research grant recipients were much more likely to have a DC orientation than the ETA grant recipients are.

I'm no expert and am definitely not sure, but I think it's based more on the country and less on ETA vs researchers. But I'm sure it varies by each country..
lizmaxfield Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 irishdunne77: I'm a finalist for Ireland too! (Good Luck to us both!) Does anyone know if Ireland's decisions are mailed out with the rest of Europe (namely on Wednesdays)? I think we should start a relaxation club for Fulbright finalists. The suspense is eating at me!
amyleigh Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Hey everyone, I applied for a Fulbright to Nepal and am wondering if anyone has received news about acceptance yet?
applesoranges22 Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 i applied to sub-saharan africa and am awaiting notification. any other sub-saharan applicants hear back yet?
nemolover Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Hey everyone, I applied for a Fulbright to Nepal and am wondering if anyone has received news about acceptance yet? i also applied to Nepal (for a research grant), and nope, i haven't heard yet. i emailed the program manager for South Asia and he said letters would be sent out in "mid-April." so i guess we have 2-3 weeks of waiting left... good luck!! hopefully we'll see each other in Nepal next year
aireater Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 applesoranges22, i also applied to a country in sub-saharan africa, nigeria. to which country did you apply? also still awaiting notification.
michael.clemons.ky Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 I applied for an ETA in Spain and found out on Monday that I got it. The packet came in a manila envelope from USPS and was sent out on March 26. Does anybody know how long it will be before we hear from the country with more details?
sakari019 Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 I applied for an ETA in Spain and found out on Monday that I got it. The packet came in a manila envelope from USPS and was sent out on March 26. Does anybody know how long it will be before we hear from the country with more details? Congratulations, Michael! I just found out today that I got an ETA for Spain as well, so maybe we'll see each other at orientation in Madrid. I'm not positive, but I'm guessing that once things are more finalized (once we send in the medical information, etc.) they will send us more solidified information on our positions. Anyone else headed for Spain?
ramonaramona Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 For applicants to Germany: I heard yesterday by mail that I am an alternate ETA. Which annoyingly means MORE WAITING. Good luck to everyone else!
klb5 Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Did you also get an e-mail about the Germany ETA program? I still have not heard yet.
summernights77kt Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 irishdunne77: I think we should start a relaxation club for Fulbright finalists. The suspense is eating at me! I agree! I can't concentrate on anything else because I'm so anxious about the Fulbright. I know I'm not going to hear back for another couple weeks, yet I get so nervous every time I check the mail. My friends are sick of me talking about it. This wait will be the death of me.
jtb01 Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 I agree with you summernights. The wait is becoming very distracting. I finally gave in and emailed about my Fulbright full grant status to study in Sweden and received a reply today (4.3.09). If anyone is waiting to hear from Sweden, the selection panel at the Swedish Fulbright Commission has already met, and the applications have been sent to the Fulbright Scholarship Board for final approval. All candidates will be receiving letters in the next few weeks notifying them of their status. It sounds like the Norway and Finland finalists have already been notified. Are there any other people out there applying to Sweden?
Anastasoula Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Me, too! My letter is supposed to go to my house while I'm in Memphis at an internship. I've been bugging my parents about the mail every day for nearly 2 weeks now and I'm surprised their still answering the phone when I call--they know exactly what I want (I guess they're grateful that for once, its not money!). Good luck to everyone else impatiently waiting (I think we have been patient long enough!).
