Got my acceptance earlier this week to PhD at UCSD but professors don't want to talk about research fellowships unless I'm there in person, and there's absolutely no mention of a recruitment day on their website or in my letter. Anyone have any info?

They don't have a recruitment day/weekend.  Along with my UCSD acceptance, I got an invitation to visit (maybe yours is missing; it was sent from a different person).  They said pick a day or two during the week (at almost any time) and they'll set up the meetings for you.  If you didn't get that email, it might be worth contacting UCSD.

Internationals waiting for UT Austin admits may have to wait till May 15. I just found out from the Grad Coordinator today that they have no plans of rolling admissions to international students until after May 15. Sigh!

Anyone heard anything from UPenn yet? I sent an email a week or two ago and got a response saying my email was forwarded to the admissions committee, but I haven't heard anything since. I figure it's a rejection at this point, but it's frustrating that they can't seem to make up their minds.

Hi everyone!

I have a question about applying to materials science programs. I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to post this, but since there isn't a materials science specific forum, I thought this might be a good place to ask!

I am just wondering if most people apply to materials science programs after having contacted specific potential advisers, or if most people just apply to the department in general?

I ask because in my undergraduate field (chemistry) it is most common to simply apply to a department without specific potential advisers picked out, as many departments go through lab rotations once you arrive. On the other hand, I have been working in the geology department at my undergrad institution, and have seem that in geology departments lab rotations rarely happen. Most students contact prospective advisers before applying, and these advisers become one of the main deciding forces behind whether or not a student is accepted. Since we don't have a materials science program at my undergrad institution, I am having a hard time finding out about how this is usually handled in materials science!

Sorry again if I should have posted this somewhere else. Thanks so much for your help!

It really depends on the school but it does certainly help to contact PI's before hand.

I so far have an almost perfect correlation between having found and contacted potential advisers in november and being accepted, and just applying to the department in general and being rejected. So I would say that yes, based on my experience, it is much better to find a specific adviser or two at each school you're applying to. It might depend on the style of your application however, and how you write your personal statement - I definitely preferred writing about fairly specific projects I'd like to do rather than general "materials are cool" things.

i called Upenn's materials science admissions office and they said that they had over 320 applications to process... They havent made any decisions yet and the results will be out by end of next week..

Thanks free_radical, you saved me the phone call.  It would be nice to hear from them, though, considering it's now less than a month until decision time.

Probably the same three as well as Professors Weaver and Kriven...the latter actually emailed me about working with ferromagnetics/multiferroics. My interests are in photonic and/or electromagnetic properties of nano/low-d materials. UIUC has a good deal of the latter, but not so much of the former, which is why I'm leaning towards my other schools at the moment, though I think research group chemistry is probably more important to me than the specific area--there's still plenty of time to branch out!

John Weaver is not doing research any more. He is just teaching.

For anyone still waiting for Berkeley, I just called them.  If you haven't heard by now it probably means you're on a waitlist.

What would you say are the chances of a wait-listed applicant getting admitted? There are quite a few of us who haven't heard back. I don't feel too optimistic about my chances.

I have no idea, I didn't ask if their wait list was ranked or anything.  All I know is that everyone should hear by late March/early April (I know, vague and not comforting, but don't hate the messenger :) ).  I imagine it might partially have to do with your research interests - i.e. if all the people in your research area decide to go somewhere else, that would help your chances.  Sorry I can't be more helpful - if you're still seriously interested in Berkeley maybe call and see if the wait list is ranked, and where you are on it.
