Anyone have any info? They don't have a recruitment day/weekend. Along with my UCSD acceptance, I got an invitation to visit (maybe yours is missing; it was sent from a different person). They said pick a day or two during the week (at almost any time) and they'll set up the meetings for you. If you didn't get that email, it might be worth contacting UCSD. I just found out from the Grad Coordinator today that they have no plans of rolling admissions to international students until after May 15. Sigh! I sent an email a week or two ago and got a response saying my email was forwarded to the admissions committee, but I haven't heard anything since. I am just wondering if most people apply to materials science programs after having contacted specific potential advisers, or if most people just apply to the department in general? I ask because in my undergraduate field (chemistry) it is most common to simply apply to a department without specific potential advisers picked out, as many departments go through lab rotations once you arrive. On the other hand, I have been working in the geology department at my undergrad institution, and have seem that in geology departments lab rotations rarely happen. Most students contact prospective advisers before applying, and these advisers become one of the main deciding forces behind whether or not a student is accepted. Since we don't have a materials science program at my undergrad institution, I am having a hard time finding out about how this is usually handled in materials science! I so far have an almost perfect correlation between having found and contacted potential advisers in november and being accepted, and just applying to the department in general and being rejected. So I would say that yes, based on my experience, it is much better to find a specific adviser or two at each school you're applying to. It might depend on the style of your application however, and how you write your personal statement - I definitely preferred writing about fairly specific projects I'd like to do rather than general "materials are cool" things. Radian Posted March 20, 2013 Share Posted March 20, 2013 Probably the same three as well as Professors Weaver and Kriven...the latter actually emailed me about working with ferromagnetics/multiferroics. My interests are in photonic and/or electromagnetic properties of nano/low-d materials. UIUC has a good deal of the latter, but not so much of the former, which is why I'm leaning towards my other schools at the moment, though I think research group chemistry is probably more important to me than the specific area--there's still plenty of time to branch out! I don't feel too optimistic about my chances. I have no idea, I didn't ask if their wait list was ranked or anything. All I know is that everyone should hear by late March/early April (I know, vague and not comforting, but don't hate the messenger ). I imagine it might partially have to do with your research interests - i.e. if all the people in your research area decide to go somewhere else, that would help your chances. Sorry I can't be more helpful - if you're still seriously interested in Berkeley maybe call and see if the wait list is ranked, and where you are on it.
