Hi

I am a practicing social worker who wants to use the knowledge of Sociology for understanding some of the social issues I have come across. I have recently become inclined towards range of socio-political activities pursued by citizens to articulate and negotiate their issues and the role of their social status (identity) in such processes. I have also published a paper in that country's leading journal, on a related topic, as well. The paper was then picked up as a chapter by a reputed international publishing house too.

Do you think any of the universities here in US will entertain someone from social work background into their sociology graduate program? I am not looking for universities with best brand name or job placement but just someone to appreciate where I am coming from and provide decent inputs.

Thanks a ton!

Of course you can transition from social work to a sociology graduate program. There are many graduate programs that have a social welfare tract or at least facutly interested in those topics. Just as a heads up, courses in socail welfare won't be practical social work courses, but more theoretical.

Social work graduates are not restricted to doctoral programs in social work/social welfare; many enroll in education, psychology, theology, and sociology. You will still need to earn an MA (en route to PhD) in the social science field of your choice. If your statement of purpose shows a strong and coherent connection between your social work background and the social science field, then you have a good shot.
