I've reached the point now in my academic career were 'm sick of doing adjunct work at community colleges that doesn't pay. Has anybody discovered jobs outside of the adjunct business that pays 30k a year or more?

Thanks,

HM

If you can land a position in a non-profit, that would be ideal, however not exactly an easy thing to do. teaching, social reasearch, etc. middle management perhaps? good luck! it's a tough right now. Hang in there.

If you live in the D.C. area and have strong quantitative and/or qualitative skills there are opportunities with firms that handle government contracts such as Booz, Allen & Hamilton, Cardno, and SAIS. Typically they are looking for people with similar backgrounds and skills to work as policy and research analyst. If you can attain full security clearance the CIA recruits people with BA and/or MA backgrounds in Sociology for Leadership Analysts positions. The salary range is between $49,861 – $97,333. Indeed.com should be added to your job search engines if it is not already.

There is life outside of academia.

yeah there's firms that hire soc MAs as research analysts. Like Lanita said, lots of work with government contracts or market research. The main thing you have to leverage is research experience. Quantitative is probably more in demand, but qualitative work is useful for research firms as well

I agree with the above - I have spent the last few years as a Researcher & Policy Analyst for a major labor union. Quantitative, quantitative and writing skills are all important in my job, and used daily.

Here's a bunch of ASA research on careers that Sociology majors go into (whether with a BA, MA, or PhD): http://asanet.org/employment/factsoncareers.cfm
