  1. Thank you all for your advice, and your knowledge on the matter. I do have strong LORs, with people whom are well known in the field. I also have a few publications in the school forum. I still have yet to take the GRE, but I'm studying like crazy, so we shall see! Hopefully all goes well. I will be sure to let you know my outcome. Thanks again, and good luck to all of you!
  2. Hello, Just wondering. I have a strong Graduate GPA but a low BA GPA, and I would like to apply for PhD. What are your thoughts on what they do with an applicant's GPA from an MA program? Do they average it out? Thanks for your feedback!
  3. Hello, This is my first post on this site, so I hope it helps... I am currently getting my MA degree in Sociology. It's a two year program. You can opt for comprehensive exams which covers both quantitative and qualitative sections, or you can write a thesis in which you will have an additional 6-7years to write and complete (get accepted/pass). But, you have to finish all your classes within the two years allotted. As long as you know the one year program comes from an accredited university, you shouldn't have a problem, when applying for PhD. MAinly, do well in your classes, raise your GPA, and do well in the GRE. Good luck!
  4. If you can land a position in a non-profit, that would be ideal, however not exactly an easy thing to do. teaching, social reasearch, etc. middle management perhaps? good luck! it's a tough right now. Hang in there.
  5. I'm assuming you are seeking professors to assist you in your dissertation. I am also a perspective PhD student, and I am pretty sure you will want to stick with professors that are permanent rather than visiting. I've heard numerous problems with students having to find new professors to assist them in the middle of their research project because one of the professors stopped working at the university. I'm not exactly experienced with such a situation myself, but that is what I've heard from colleagues and students.
  6. How likely am I to get into a phd program with a 3.6 g.p.a. ? I just finished my MA in Soc... I have three strong letters of recommendation, some extracurricular work in the field, and 80th percentile GRE's. What are your thoughts? Thanks.
