  1. Hi, I'm starting a PhD program in Sociology this fall. There are two incoming professors who strongly match my research interests, and I am thinking of approaching them to see if they need a research assistant. One is a visiting professor (I'm assuming staying 2-3 years) and one is starting this year as a junior professor. Any thoughts on working with either? Pros and cons? ie Would either have sufficient funding to take on an assistant? I'm assuming it's better to concentrate on developing relationships with well-established professors already in the department - but how much does it matter?
  2. Hi, I'm an incoming Sociology PhD student at UW Madison. When is the best time to begin looking for apartments for the academic year? I'm moving the last week of August.
  3. Anyone in a position where they feel like they are ultimately choosing between grad school and a relationship?
  4. For people attending UW-Madison's Visit Day, I got the following reply from Mary, the Graduate Coordinator re: my question about what the dress code would be: "We don’t really have one. The most important thing is to be comfortable. Then, probably pick something a little nicer than every day wear. We don’t dress up, no heels or anything like that. It’s definitely casual. And dress for yourself, not us. Hope that helps."
  5. @ Jeff - I don't get the impression that Stanford's system is alphabetical. My last name begins with a D and I have yet to hear anything. I'm (optimistically) hoping that those of us who haven't heard are second-stringers in the "maybe" pile? Time will tell...
