pepper84 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I only learned about this program after speaking with an admissions officer at a grad school fair. Looking into it further, it seems really interesting and very multi-disciplinary, with a good focus on actually running governmentprograms/nonprofits and lots of opportunities to cross-register with other parts of the school. However, other than its own advertising/website, I haven't hear much about this program (specifically, the MGA track). Does anyone out there have more information on how good this program is/what job propects are/geographic ability of graduates to move around/funding/admissions/etc.? Obviously, UPenn has an oustanding "brand," so to speak, but Fels seems to fly below the radar. Any thoughts?
wishin'_and_hopin' Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I was wondering if we could re-visit this topic. I was prepared to make a tough decision between Duke and Georgetown for my MPP until I got an email from Fels today offering full tuition and a stipend. Has anyone heard anything about Fels? I applied last minute because they have a strong alliance with Teach For America which, pardon the pun, seemed to have paid off. Thanks!
Canukgirl Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Wow, I guess I'm not getting in....people have already head back and I havn't...can't be a good sign. Anyone else apply to Fels and not heard back???

I unfortunately don't know too much, but they also have a fellowship program for Returned Peace Corps volunteers....between that and working with TFA, they are clearly making an effort to get great students in the program.
wishin'_and_hopin' Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Canukgirl: I only heard yesterday. It seems like a lot of schools notify over several days. Also, if this helps your anxiety any, both my phone call and email came at the close of day (~5:00 pm)...there is no need to start clicking refresh repeatedly until about 4:55. There is definitely still hope. ebee: That is good information about Peace Corps; I will take whatever I can get at this point. Thanks!
dngo Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 The Director called me late Monday afternoon, around 4PM EDT, and I received an official email yesterday, with only $8,000 in funding (AmeriCorps alumni). Congrats, wishin'_and_hopin! That is a stellar financial package. Canukgirl: Don't give up! Good luck
pepper84 Posted March 11, 2009 Author Posted March 11, 2009 Has anybody visited or had serious contact with the school? I'd love to hear people's thoughts--they've offered a generous amount of money, but at least in my current policy world, no one has heard of the school. I wonder if that would be a big detriment.
dngo Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I haven't heard much about the program, but am planning to visit next Friday for the Admitted Students Day. I'm wondering if the UPenn brand is strong enough to overcome any deficiencies in having a lesser known school. I think UPenn is at a level where there are no programs that are subpar, right?
Canukgirl Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I was rejected! Ahh!!! The email stated to scroll down for my "admissions" letter....wahta tease. I did and it was a rejection email! Why couldn't they just call it the decsion letter...why call it admissions and get my hopes up? I'm so upset ... this was my #1!
SSB1 Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Don't feel too bad. I got rejected too. Their letter was, uh, quite mean. Kind of made me feel like I'm glad I didn't go there. Screw em.

I don't know about you, but they didn't even address me! No : Dear Applicant...nothing....just straight to the point.
SSB1 Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I don't know about you, but they didn't even address me! No : Dear Applicant...nothing....just straight to the point. Yeah, same way. Did it look like the message was forwarded? That is how I saw it. It was just a really obnoxious manner of going about addressing someone who spent a good chunk of time applying (and paying). Honestly, I thought I would have gotten in no problem with how Fels is designed, but apparently not so much.
dngo Posted March 27, 2009 Posted March 27, 2009 Is anyone seriously considering Fels? I attended the Admitted Students Day last week and fell in love with the Fels Mansion, UPenn's campus, and the surrounding area. I was also shocked at the personal nature of the school- the Director of Admissions asked me about an internship I did. Granted, there were only twenty or so of us there, but it's going to be difficult to turn down that personal touch. Did anyone else attend the Admitted Students Day last week? Impressions?
sunflower Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 Hi... I am applying for the MGA executive program. Does anyone know how heavily the GRE is considered for either the executive or full time MGA program? Thanks
