Hello fellow anthropologists. Has anyone out there heard anything about when we'll hear something about whether we've been awarded a Wenner-Gren Dissertation Fellowship? I'm so anxious I can hardly write clearly.

I've had a look at some of last year's postings regarding Wenner Gren successes/emails - I got the impression we wouldn't hear until mid-October. I'm anxiously waiting too!

haha! ya - from what I gather, we MIGHT not even hear until after the Nov 1st deadline - they don't guarentee it.

I heard from them a few weeks back to clarify something in my budget, but not since (maybe that's a good thing?). I've got my fingers crossed we hear sooner rather than later - there is so much going on around this time of year, only having a week-ish to revise and resubmit would be stressful! :)

Did the email ask if you had received any other funding or just a clarification on your budget? I think this is a good sign either way, but in the past, WG has sent out emails asking (potentially successful) applicants if they have received other funding before the official offer. I don' think this a guaranteed but it looks like it is good sign from past funding cycles. Has anyone else received a funding or budget email?

The email was just to clarify my requested funds, not to enquire if I had recieved other funding. I'm still taking it as a positive sign (even if I'm unsuccessful) it shows that they were actually reading my application! :)

Hey fellow anthros! The additional information I can supply is that last year I did not hear back from Wenner Gren until sometime in October (I think it was ~October 10). But good luck! That means you should hear back soon, probably within days! :)

During the last W-G cycle, they checked budgets for compliance 4 months and 1 week into the application cycle (early March), and these emails were not good or bad news. Then the prized budget emails came out 1 month later, 5 months and 1 week into the cycle. So possibly a budget email sent in early Sept would not be a good or bad thing, while the "hearing back" mildredp is talking about in early Oct is the budget email of the best kind?

(Side note: How obsessive do I need to be to go back and read my old posts from forums 6 months ago?)

I don't think I interpreted those past posts in the same way. The email I got requesting further information about my budget came at about 5 months after application. I thought (based on past posts) that the emails inquiring about any additional funding awarded should be the early-mid October ones....

Basically I don't think anyone has heard anything concrete or even indicative of success at this point... but I"m hoping maybe for next week!!!

Fingers crossed!!

Hmm, don't quite understand your posting, but if you got an email "a few weeks" before your posting of September 17, that's 4 months, not 5. So what I was saying is that that could be one of the 4-month-compliance-check emails, rather than one of the 5-month-stand-by-for-cold-hard-cash emails. Not to jinx you, knock on wood!

I mean, whatever, minor detail and all. We're all just here to unproductively obsess anyway!

oops, yes you're right - I'm currently juggling so many things I counted the months incorrectly ;)

Either way, the email I got was neither positive nor negative, simply indicative that they were indeed reading my budget at the time. I never thought it was one of the 'stand by for cash' emails!

Speaking of which, has anyone received a 'Stand by for cash" email yet?!? Should be within the next 2 weeks...

Hey guys! FYI-- a friend of mine at another university got the stand by for cash email. I guess announcements must be happening! Good luck again to everyone!!!

congrats to the folks who have heard!! does this mean it's lights-out for the rest of us? (don't.mean to.be a downer, but you know...;)

It seems like last year they staggered the rejections and the acceptances over two days, so we may still have a shot:) Good luck!

Posted

Oof, my rejection came a lot more quickly this time around. Possibly because my score's worse this time?

Good luck to the rest of you!

rejected too. and wow was that feedback harsh. one reviewer called my field (communication) superficial. nice.

Congrats to those who have the 'Stand by for Cash' email!

I was rejected - some good feedback, but like eec, some was harsh! At least we know early enough to resubmit for November!

hey all, FYI: i JUST got my "pending"/standby for cash email a couple of hours ago, after spending the whole night crushed, thinking that i didn't get it. so if you haven't heard, you haven't heard.

sidenote: "pending" really does mean you got it, huh? it's a terrifying email to grasp onto, there's no clue i got it except that i don't need to reapply...

@hoo

I agree it is a terrifying email as it puts you into a limbo of thinking "I got funding" but not being able to be sure that you actually got funding. Has anyone heard of anyone not getting funded after receiving this email?

Posted

As a former wenner-gren grantee (from last year), let me just say: 1) congrats to those who got it; and 2) the "pending" email should be read as saying, "congratulations! you definitely got it!" -- I literally have never heard of a case where someone received a "pending" email and was later denied funds. Really!
