Gabya06 Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 Hello, I plan on meeting with a professor to ask some questions about the PH.D program in Applied Math at Columbia, and wanted some advice on questions to ask (and what not to ask). I have read a lot about the program online and have a good general understanding about the program and potential research and career areas… but… I have been out of school for 6 years and have only worked in the finance industry so I am a bit out of it. I don’t want to sound silly and just ask basic questions... any suggestions on important questions to ask?
Gabya06 Posted September 21, 2012 Author Posted September 21, 2012 General things about the program, such as how long it takes to graduate, jobs after graduation, and chosing advisors, stuff like that.
cyberwulf Posted September 21, 2012 Posted September 21, 2012 Ask "can you tell me a little bit about what you're currently working on?" You'd be amazed by how many prospective students never ask this on visits. Even if you don't understand all the details, I can guarantee you the professor will be happy you are showing and interest, and be glad to expound about their work.
