donhon Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Hi everyone, I'm thinking about applying to Masters programs in Biology. I'm in Massachusetts, and really don't want to have to rack up more student loan debt. So I've been considering state schools here for lower tuition costs to get a MS in Biology, though options are very limited. However, I was wondering if anyone knew of any MS Biology programs that had funding. I've not had any luck searching--it seems just PhD programs do. Unfortunately I don't have any research experience, so that's why I'm considering the MS route first--to hopefully get more experience under my belt before going on to see if I can get into any PhD programs. Does anyone have any advice or info? Thanks! budgiepie 1
Hatem Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Hi Donhon, Yes there few fully funded master's programs in Biology in the following institutions: 1-Illinois state University 2- Syracuse University 3- University of Houston 4- University of Denver 5- Virginia Institute of technology 6- Kansas state university 7- Boston university 8- North eastern university
mtlve Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 do not waste your time and money doing a masters program. You can gain similar experience working as a tech and you get paid for it! Check out the NIH post-bac program in addition to just applying for tech positions. Many PIs actually enjoy training pre-graduate students too.
Mirus Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 I'll have to disagree with mtlve. It really depends on what your career goals are whether a masters is beneficial or not. Hatem's list is far from exhaustive, too. My program (College of William and Mary) is fully funded, and I believe University of FL can be too. You just need to do your research and figure out who's accepting masters students. In my experience, it's not terribly difficult to find funded MS programs. However, I will agree with mtlve that if you for sure want/need a PhD, working would be a better option than school, even if you do find funding.
