Subject of MS thesis important for doctoral degree funding in U.S?

Hi Guys,

I study electrical eng./communication branch for the master degree.this branch includes processing and data communication but I want to choose my thesis subject in the processing field. I want to know that if I apply for the doctoral degree in U.S whether I can be funded by a professor who's interest area is the data communication or not?

I think as long as you have some type of background in what you're applying for (courses or projects), your master's thesis doesn't have to be similar to what you do in your PhD. I'm kind of changing subfields a bit from my MS to my PhD so that can work.
