Hi,

I am a domestic student applying to Biostatistics PhD/Masters

Big Ten University, Major: stats minor: math, honors college

overall gpa: 3.734

Stats Courses: many stats classes including 4 graduate level courses (biostats I (4.0), biostats II (taking tis spring), Advanced Statistics for biologists (4.0), sample surveys (4.0) . overall i will have taken 10 stats courses (4 graduate level).

Math courses: calcII (4.0) multivariate calculus (4.0) mathematical biology (3.0) linear algebra (2.5) abstract algebra (2.0) analysis (taking this spring)

Computer science/ statistical software: extensive use of R, SAS and SPSS. Computer science course in Databases and a course in Programming

Research:

-3 years in a Microbiology and Molecular Genetics Lab. (through a NSF Sponsored Mathematical Biology Program). Some highlights include a first place award at a poster presentation and second author of a paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science for my work on a project.

-senior honors thesis

GRE 167 Q 159 V 4.0 AW

My biggest concern is my grade in linear algebra and abstract algebra. However i took these courses very early on in my undergraduate education and am confident i would perform better in these courses now.

My 3 LOR should all be solid.

My ultimate goal is a phd so i am applying for PhD programs, but am willing to complete a masters degree first.

Here are the schools i plan to apply:

Michigan

Harvard

UNC

Washington

John Hopkins

Iowa

Minnesota

Ohio State

Cincinnati

Penn

Brown

Wisconsin

What are my chances for these schools for PhD/MS?

thanks!

I would say pretty high for most of the schools on your list. Harvard, UW, and Hopkins might be hard since their applicant pools are so strong, but all others should be good chances (with Michigan, Minnesota, UNC, Wisconsin, Penn, Brown being sort of like the next guys on the list in terms of ranking).

Your best bet is probably to apply as soon as possible, looks like some of the first deadlines have already passed.

You will almost surely get into MS programs at most of these places. PhD admission chances are going to depend on your school (there is variety within the Big 10 in terms of school strength) and how much adcoms worry about those lower grades in LA and AA. I'd say you have a reasonable chance of admission to a few schools in the 4-8 range, and you're in great shape for anything below that range.
