jtu2tj Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 hello, I'm a canadian applying to canadian universities, one american university and some uk universities. I"m applying to Masters international development programs. I'm almost done my applications. the one thing that i'm really confused about is the funding/financial aspect. So if someone can please explain this to me it would be really helpful! when am I suppose to apply for all this stuff, and where? and how? I'm the first to do a graduate school here in my family, so this all is confusing to me. any help would be appreciated!
lewin Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 I don't know anything about your field, but if it's like psychology then good programs will pay your tuition and a living stipend. But, as a fellow Canadian, I can strongly recommend applying for SSHRC master's funding and, if you're applying in Ontario, then the Ontario Graduate Scholarship. But those deadlines are often in the fall so you might be out of luck for next fall.
jtu2tj Posted December 10, 2012 Author Posted December 10, 2012 thanks so much for your response lewin00! i can't believe i missed those deadlines, being a first time applicant from anyone i know, this has been such a hard process. i didn't realize that the deadlines would be much sooner than the application deadlines. so just to be clear, when i get offered admission to any of the programs they will also provide me with funding option? even though i didn't specifically apply for them?
lewin Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 Don't feel too bad, the deadlines are early and lots of people miss them. so just to be clear, when i get offered admission to any of the programs they will also provide me with funding option? even though i didn't specifically apply for them? I think this varies from program to program. But (in psych anyway) most places list their minimum funding commitments on their websites. For comparison, in my program it's $22,000/year (minus $7000 tuition).
TakeruK Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Also, usually admission letters state a funding offer as well. In many Canadian schools, this becomes a commitment/contract as well. Some of my letters state something like Your stipend will be $X with Y hours of TA commitment if you have no scholarship, a SSHRC, or a OGS (with different values of X and Y for each scenario).
