RovingCalypso Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 So I gave the GRE on the 17th of Dec and it was bad. Got 157 on Verbal and only 158 on Quant. I was targetting the 15th Jan deadline for U of Florida/Michigan/Houston/Southern Cali/Maryland for the Electrical Engineering MS. I do intend to retake the GRE but that can't be before 17th Jan and deadlines will be missed. So I've two questions. 1. Is my score enough to get me in, the quantitative i mean? (3.29 GPA international applicant, and 4 years of relevant industry experience) 2. Do these colleges give the relaxation of sending the GRE scores a bit later if all the other requirements have been met? Thanks
Seeking Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 (edited) For your discipline, I guess the verbal scores are alright if your TOEFL/IELTS scores are high enough. But your Quant scores are a little low for your discipline and it's the Quant scores that are going to be important for this discipline more than the verbal scores. After the deadline, the Graduate admission departments take a few days to sort out the scores and match them to the applications. If your fresh scores reach during this post-application period, for some schools it may be alright, but some schools may have a strict rule that all scores should reach them before the deadline. So, read the guidelines carefully to see if this condition is laid out. You may consider emailing the Graduate admissions and asking if they would accept the scores if they reach a few days later. Also, you can write to ETS and ask, in how many days at the earliest they can send the scores. Usually, they take a few weeks after the test date. Edited December 18, 2012 by Seeking Seeking 1
RovingCalypso Posted December 18, 2012 Author Posted December 18, 2012 I gave IELTS and have 8.5 out of 9.0 in it so that is not a concern. Thing is I can only retake GRE after the 17th of Jan which is AFTER the deadlines of the colleges I am interested in. I was looking at a few New to Old Gre conversion websites, and 158 quant converted to 740 Old quant. Are these conversions correct or just random?
emmm Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 I think it may depend on when the committee meets. If your score gets to them before the meeting, I think it would be considered. If not, you'd be out of luck.
Seeking Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 (edited) Here is the ETS conversion table of old-to-new GRE scores - http://www.ets.org/s...information.pdf In your discipline, a Quant score of 165+ would be regarded as ideal, especially at top-ranked universities. For middle-ranged universities, perhaps a score of 160+ should be good. A lower score may affect your funding chances adversely. If you are going to self-fund at least part of your education, you can take a chance at the middle-ranged universities. But still, a score of 158 would be a risk. Of course, some universities have the system of uploading self-reported unofficial scores online which you can copy from the ETS website as soon as they are visible. Th e ad-comm sees these scores and the official scores arrive later. But this is true only for some universities. I just noticed that your GPA may be a little on the lower side. How do you rate U Mich, U florida, UMD, USC and U Houston? Mid, lower or top? Secondly, How do these university consider experience? I have 4 years of relevant field experience, do you think that would factor in my favor or not?
Seeking Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 Experience would certainly count in your favour. You may consider emailing the Graduate co-ordinators of the EE departments of these universities and asking them what has been the range of GRE Quant/Verbal scores of successful candidates in their departments in last few years and how much the GRE scores influence selection, including funding. Sometimes this information is also given on the Univ website.
