Marisari Posted December 25, 2012 Posted December 25, 2012 I recently applied to U Minn's Child Psychology program. Part of the application, the personal statement, can also double as a "diversity statement", which, if I'm understanding correctly, is also considered for a diversity fellowship. The award is fantastic (includes a stipend, tuition and subsidized health insurance), so obviously I wrote my statement with it in mind. About 3 days after I received a notice from the department saying all the components of my application were received, I got an email from the Office for Diversity in Graduate Education (ODGE) saying they'd like to inform me of programs that are available for graduate students on their campus, and saying that their mission is to coordinate and to lead the University's initiatives in the area of recruitment, funding, retention, and graduation of a diverse student body. Has anyone else applying to U Minn received an email from the ODGE? I'm wondering if this is a standard email they send out to all applicants, or if I have good reason to be hopeful about my chances of getting in?? I'm so anxious about all of this waiting, I feel like I need some outside perspective here. Thanks for your input, and happy holidays to all of you out there who are going nuts, too!
iowaguy Posted December 26, 2012 Posted December 26, 2012 That is not a standard email. I am applying to a different UMN program, but did not receive anything similar to you (I am a Caucasian male). I applied 2 weeks ago... I would think it's a positive sign for you!
Marisari Posted December 27, 2012 Author Posted December 27, 2012 Thanks! I'm going to let myself get a little bit hopeful about this. Good luck to you!
ohgoodness Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 I got several e-mails from Minnesota regarding my application and other fantastic chances at the university.. but I never even finished my application
Marisari Posted December 28, 2012 Author Posted December 28, 2012 Out of curiosity, what campus did you guys apply to? Twin Cities?
Angua Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 I also filled out that part of the application (I'm Latina), and I also got that email. I shrugged it off as a form thing, but hopefully you're right and it's a good sign!
claubea011 Posted January 4, 2013 Posted January 4, 2013 I received the U of M Diversity Office email too ( I am Latina). I have no idea what to make of it and I have not heard anything from them yet. I hope this is a good sign too. We'll have to wait and see. PS: I applied to Twin Cities.
piano5115 Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I'm pretty sure it's a typical thing they're sending out to people that are considered minorities (I'm asian). I received 2 email ( I applied to 2 different twin city programs) that were exactly the same.
Marisari Posted January 7, 2013 Author Posted January 7, 2013 Yeah, I'm now convinced this is an automated email. Oh, well, there goes my excitement! Good luck to you all.
Silverstars Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Yeah, I'm now convinced this is an automated email. Oh, well, there goes my excitement! Good luck to you all. I applied to University of Minnesota's child psychology program too. Have you heard anything from them yet?
Marisari Posted January 31, 2013 Author Posted January 31, 2013 I applied to University of Minnesota's child psychology program too. Have you heard anything from them yet? I've been considered an 'alternate'. It's kind of like a wait list, where if one or more of the 5 accepted applicants declines, I might get their spot. What about you? Hopefully good news!
i.am.me Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 I did not get this email! lol I got accepted into the program for education and just accepted a nomination for a diversity fellowship. I have not heard anything else about funding though.
Marisari Posted February 1, 2013 Author Posted February 1, 2013 I did not get this email! lol I got accepted into the program for education and just accepted a nomination for a diversity fellowship. I have not heard anything else about funding though. That's awesome, congratulations! I'm sure the funding will work out for you.
i.am.me Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 I sure hope so because funding will determine where I go.
praxismakesperfect Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 I just got this email today -- was wondering if it is a good sign, or something they send out to all 'minority' applicants
ProfMoriarty Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 (edited) I applied to U Minn's Geography program. I'm Latina, and have received no such thing. ETA: The application status says "Awaiting program decision", though, which I guess is a good thing. Edited January 10, 2014 by paolaplease
ferd Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I got this email too (applied to PhD program at Humphrey). I am very sure it's an automated email.
Socially Awkward Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Hello, I'd like to add my name to the list of people who are saying it is an automated email. Upon seeing it in my inbox I was ecstatic, however I remember receiving one last month when I first applied, too I got this email for the second time two days ago. I hate that the email is from "University of Minnesota Graduate School" and that they start the email with "Welcome to the University of Minnesota!" As well as ending it with, "We look forward to working with you!" hahaha The nerve of these people! Anyway, best of luck to you who did apply to U of Minnesota.
