jacquelinelate Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 I am applying to MFA Studio Art Programs (painting and drawing concentration) that have an interdisciplinary approach allowing students to take courses in other departments or has an emphasis on social practice/community. So far I have applied to UC Berkeley and will be applying to Indiana Un., Indianapolis; Portland State Un.; and CA College of the Arts. Maryland Institute College of the Arts is another consideration. Are there any other programs that are similar to this that you would recommend? Or are you currently in one of these programs and have any feedback? Thank you!
michaelwebster Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 (edited) SAIC has a strong social practice element, primarily within the sculpture department. I was looking for social practice programs and ended up at SAIC, and TAed a class called "Site, Environment, Community" for example. Carnegie Mellon and Otis both have social practice elements as well. Painting and social practice is an unusual, but not unheard of combination, do you have a website? eco Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 If you want to teach I would look into csu northridge. It is a very small program and not well known. But I know they have funding, and TA and GA positions. The head of painting is Samantha Feilds who is incredible. The program is truly interdisciplinary and they will let you do anything you want. It is a hidden little gem of a school.
