I know everyone is eagerly awaiting to hear back from schools, but who else is attending this conference? This will be my first time attending a national STD conference (geez, what an unfortunate acronym), so if you have attended a previous one please share your experience with us. (Plus, I want to look forward to doing something rather than dread the incoming rejections I'm bound to receive from grad schools.)

Hi Gauche!  I attended the 2012 STD Convention in New Orleans last spring; it was a lot of fun!  Granted, there were some *really* bad papers, but some of them were quite good: for example, I chatted afterwards with a kid who I thought gave an excellent presentation, and he's now doing a Ph.D. at UPenn.

Anyways, I received email notification today that my paper was accepted, so I'll be attending this year's convention as well.

One piece of advice: don't spend all of your time at the conference!  My friends and I only spent 3 hours or so a day at the conference and used the rest of our time to explore NOLA (and get drunk on Bourbon St., of course).  At graduate/professional conferences, I believe that most people do the same thing: go to their panels, their friends' panels, and a few other panels that interest them, and then spend the rest of their time doing other stuff.

But yeah, I'm sure that this year's conference will be lots of fun.  And it's in Portland, which is supposedly a really cool city.

tempting... this would be an excellent excuse to visit powell's for the first time.

I'll be there as well! Who doesn't love an acceptance letter, even if it isn't from grad schools? :) I was also at last year's conference in NOLA-- lots of fun! Two Espressos is right: spend time out in the city. We went to a few different panels (there were five of us [plus two profs] and we all were in separate panels, so we all went to each others' as well) but went out and explored New Orleans. This year we're taking six people (plus two profs again), so it's sure to be a good time (although perhaps slightly less exciting... compared to Bourbon Street, haha).

If this was directed at me, I don't feel comfortable sharing my topic because it's pretty unorthodox, and so doing would really eliminate any anonymity I have on here, as I doubt anyone else at this conference will be presenting on a similar subject!  I will say, however, that I'm talking about conceptual/theoretical issues rather than a work of literature proper.

it was directed at you as well as/possibly gauche (i wasn't clear based on the original post if gauche is attending strictly as an attendee or presenting as well). i can understand your desire to retain some anonymity. sounds interesting though, good luck!

I'm headed to Portland for this as well! I enjoyed the conference last year (although I agree that some of the papers weren't the best I'd heard), and I am definitely looking forward to the conference this year. I'm dragging some fellow students with me, so it should be a fun time!
