  4. "it is the most wonderful place I've been" "you are headed (so far!) to an INCREDIBLE program in a truly incredible place. Rejoice!" "here's a small-town kindness in State College exuded by many of the townies that make it feel very welcoming" "I am really excited about the idea of PSU next year. The more I think about it, the more I realize that it really should have been my first choice" "State College has one of the lowest crime rates in the country and is at the top of many "best places to live" lists." Sure sounds like worship to me. In a small town environment like that, you have to take the crime rate with a grain of salt. Sure, they probably don't have tons of street crime. But as the Sandusky scandal proves, there's probably a lot of crime that goes unreported.
  5. It's amazing to me that you guys call what I'm saying "nastiness." Seriously? You don't think that the real nastiness is just going along with all the mindless Penn State worship? Here's a little valuable reading on groupthink and moral culpability in the case: http://ideas.time.com/2012/07/17/penn-state-cover-up-group-think-in-action/
  6. The scandal was not surrounding just one man. If you followed the story at all, it involved a great deal of other people. Including the student body that protested when actions were finally taken against the people involved in the scandal. If you want to denounce other people for drawing attention to the case, at least get your facts straight. I personally think it would be preferable not to attend a school, or live in a community, that has been tarnished by that kind of malicious negligence of children's welfare. That doesn't mean I think someone who feels differently is a bad person. Plus it's not like Bfat has a choice in the matter -- she's only received one acceptance and it's either Penn State or no PhD.
  7. "Being a rapist myself, I take these issues particularly seriously"...
  8. Ah, trees and good nooks. Well that makes up for pedophilic sexual abuse any day. Why didn't you say so earlier?! Heaven forbid me for being inappropriate on an internet forum. I really shouldn't mention the egregious moral errors of a school administration surrounding repeated sexual violations of trusting young boys, that is so wrong of me! Meanwhile, it's perfectly acceptable to celebrate the "activisty" nature of a school that protested the firing of a coach directly involved in the coverup of multiple rapes. That, my friends, is what we call "appropriate behavior."
  9. It's just a ridiculous generalization to say that "everyone is kind" anywhere. It can't possibly be true. Sandusky is a very easy counterexample. But he was not the only person involved in the cover-up and inaction surrounding those rapes. Getting defensive and pretending that it was only one man is not a very kind thing for you to do to all the victims.
  10. I was making a joke, you obviously didn't get the irony. Your own attempt at jokes reminds me of an old man trying to do jumping jacks.
  11. You are a sad person with no sense of humor and I feel sad for you.
  12. Here's my advice: never log into the website to check your app status. If you got accepted, THEY will contact YOU. And if you weren't accepted then why rush to find out?
  13. hot fudge sundae-flavored pop tarts. You don't even need to heat them up. Just eat 'em raw they are DELICIOUS
  14. Sometimes I just want to get into a good, old-fashioned smackdown on the internet and make someone cry. But then, even if it happens, I don't know that it's happened because I can't see the crying behind the screen. Sigh
  15. They used in contexts like "everyone" doesn't sound awkward to me. Everybody/everyone to me sounds like "todos" in Spanish, it represents an infinite number of people, so they sounds right. I think the only time that they sounds like an awkward construction to my ears is when it's used to describe a single, specific person. Ex: "Asleepawake uses gifs because they like them a lot and they just want everyone to 'deal with it,' so to speak."
  16. I always think it sounds hella awkward to call a single person "they." But that's just me. The same person who casually inserts norcal slang into otherwise inoffensive sentences.
  17. If you guys just want to upvote all my posts, it would mean a lot to me. I'm trying to make it over 200 :D
