  1. So I guess no one knows the answer to my question about how common it is to require teaching in the first year? I know CUNY, Stanford and Columbia all don't start with TA-ships until year 2.
  2. They make you TA your first year?? How common is that? I don't think any of my schools require that.
  3. How is that cryptic? You're a finalist. They're gonna let you know later if they accepted you and if they will fund you. Not much of a close-reader, are you?
  4. or very late night, depending how you judge these things
  5. But if your waiter gives you shitty service, you're allowed to leave a shitty tip.
  6. Stop kissing their boots, Asleepawake
  7. I'm midway through my list as well. We'll see what happens. There's still two months left of this...
  8. How about cub reporter? Or culture critic? Maybe interior decorator?
  9. And it will only get more frustrating when you guys go on the job market...
  10. I was feeling like you, Two Espressos, until I heard an encouraging peep. It's very easy to doubt yourself. It's much more difficult to actively seek out your strengths and compliment yourself in times of self-doubt. I'm not saying that you should be trying to do this (sometimes you just CAN'T) but what I am saying is your feelings could change very soon, once a school validates you a little bit with some positive attention. And I'm sure it will happen very soon.
  11. Ok, I amend my position: The Ivies are totally full of snobs. Don't come here. It's awful.
  12. ^ my dog is totally anti-intellectual and it's becoming a real problem.
  13. I'm continuing to read Internet forums. I don't recommend them to anyone ever
  14. My parents are on board with my plans. My dad had a hard time understanding exactly what it was I wated to do, but he's come around this year. I don't know what changed exactly, I just had to keep explaining that I wanted to be a professor and finally something clicked in his head. My mom has always been my biggest fan. I think it's important to find emotional support outside your family, though, because a field as esoteric as this one offers weird emotional blows constantly. Having supportive professors mentoring me has made a huge difference for my emotional well-being.
  15. Someday when I grow up I want to marry her.
  16. 2 rejections, 2 interviews, still waiting on 4 schools. So far it's a tie...

  17. If you're eligible for a tenure track job teaching something you like, I would say go for it! Honestly, do you even need a PhD if you can already land a job like that?
  18. I'm feeling okay. This morning my prof told me he would help me "hibernate in Brazil" if I need to take another year and re-apply. So it's all good.
  19. CUNY. Thanks for the congrats I just hate this pressure to keep performing. I want unconditional acceptance, like my momma gives me
  20. I got an interview with them this morning. I'm going to be in NYC anyway so I'm trying to arrange an in-person meeting but I'll probably have to Skype as well. I talked to one of the professors on the phone just now.
  21. Congrats Stephanie! I've always enjoyed your posts and I think you're a smart gal. In other news, another NYC school wants to interview me. What's with all the interviewing? Why can't I just get accepted already??
  22. I'm pretty sure this whole "we ain't the REAL poor" mentality is what drove the vicious racism of poor whites towards blacks in the Southern US for hundreds of years.
