Loseric Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Have been reading a few threads on here lately and it seems like visitation days or weekends are common for admitted students, even those in MA programs. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic here, but I'm trying to plan a trip for March and am wondering if I might miss some of these visitation days as a result of being out of town. I'm applying for my MA in higher education, and this especially concerns me as I know some of these weekends involve interviews for internships and assistantships. Can those experienced posters give us an idea of what schools usually have visitation weekends, and when they usually are held? Thanks in advance.
ZeChocMoose Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 (edited) Can you delay your trip to end of April or May? I remember that March was a very busy time for me when I was applying for higher ed master's programs. All 5 of my programs had visit days. I think I pretty much had a visit every weekend that month. And yes, you do definitely want to attend the campus visit days especially since you'll be interviewing for positions. When I was a master's student, I coordinated the student - employer interview matching process for the visit days. It was a beast trying to make everyone happy (i.e. making sure students got the interviews that they wanted and making sure the employers got the students that they wanted to interview.) In my program, students who could not attend the campus visit days were given the contact information of employers and were told to contact them directly to set up phone interviews. It was really difficult trying to coordinate the people who could come so we didn't have enough time nor resources to coordinate the interviewing schedules for the students who couldn't come. I don't know if that is atypical or not of how my program handled it. If you can tell us where you applied - I am sure more people can help you out on whether those schools have visit days. Sometimes if you do a little digging on the program's website, there will be a calendar or an announcement that tells you when the campus visit day is. Edited January 12, 2013 by ZeChocMoose
Loseric Posted January 12, 2013 Author Posted January 12, 2013 Eek! Looks I'll be delaying that trip then. Thanks for the info, ZeChocMoose. I'm applying to: HGSE, UPENN, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Boston College, Stanford, Columbia, UVA, UMichigan, and Michigan state, if that helps any. Is it common for all schools to schedule interviews during visit days? If so, I'm a little nervous at the idea of possibly keeping up with potential interviews/visits.
suorange03 Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I'm in the same situation. Just applying for a M.A. in Higher Education and trying to prepare for possible upcoming visits. I cast a fairly wide net in terms of programs that I applied to. Just didn't want to limit myself at the start, since getting accepted, merit scholarships and available assistantships will also factor into my decision. Would love to take the months of February and March off from work to attend everything, but I know that's not realistic! I'll just have to prioritize once I start hearing back from schools.
