BoilerEpi Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Just wanted to kick of a Fall 2013 thread for Epidemiology/Public Health PhD decisions. Just say where you've heard from and what your stats are. Let me know if this is already started elsewhere. Ugrad GPA: 3.2 Grad GPA: 3.88 (MPH Community Health/Health Promotion) GRE: V-160 (610) Q-155 (710) AW-4.0 Haven't heard anything yet. UNC CH-Epidemiology Wisconsin Mad-Epidemiology CSU-Epidemiology Minn-Environmental Health Infectious Disease
VBD Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 -waves at fellow Environmental health infectious disease lover!- I'm not sure if this is counted as "started somewhere else" but here is where some of the PhD's in public health are posting our program wish list, though no stats are in the thread. Yay public health! We may be few in numbers but we make up for it in.. something! loganartemis 1

Aversion to the hard sciences! haha I mean...lower than average smoking incidence, better eating habits, and more frequent STI testing! VBD 1
Shostakovich Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Pretty sure most biostatisticians post almost exclusively in Applied Sciencs & Mathematics.
BoilerEpi Posted January 21, 2013 Author Posted January 21, 2013 Pretty sure most biostatisticians post almost exclusively in Applied Sciencs & Mathematics. I didn't mean stats stats, I meant post your stats referring to GPA GRE etc and if you've heard back from epi programs.

Haha, sorry to jump on you about it. Yea it seems like the bio-stats results are coming out right now, I've seen Epi results mainly form Emory thus far (just a few). Haven't heard yet but think I should hear from UNC pretty soon.

At least in Biostats many schools seem to release results quite arbitrarily. I've been told many schools have a system similar to rolling admissions where applicants who submit their apps earlier have slightly better chance of being considered (similar to an early action app for undergrad admissions). I actually heard from UNC right before Christmas (funding to be decided later in a separate process), and haven't heard from Emory yet (didn't do their video supplemental) but in any case not too interested in their program anymore. Good luck on UNC!
BoilerEpi Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 Looks like (at least from what I've seen on here) that the UNC-Epi acceptances haven't gone out yet. My guess is that they're waiting till the very end of Jan just like last year, no matter what day of the week it falls on.

Were your publications as first author? I've heard that goes a long way. Can't wait to hear from UNC
HFCin Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Congrats on your interviews! Were your publications as first author? I've heard that goes a long way. Can't wait to hear from UNC Thanks! IUPUI's school of public health is brand new, and I thought they were going to be at the bottom of my list, but now I like them a lot! I have one first author pub., 3 supporting authors (2 published, one in progress), and 2 supporting author conference abstracts. I was nervous bc my GRE score basically sucks, and my MPH is in policy & management, but I think people are responding very well to the first author publication. I don't have high hopes for UNC but I hope people in the post get some good results!

It's funny you mention that, I'm from Indiana I know that IUPUI's PhD program is pretty much brand new so I didn't want to apply there, also my wife really wants to move out of state. Your GREs are a bit low, but then again there are other parts to your application. I have one first author pub and a few department level monetary awards for research. I'm really hoping I made an impression on the UNC faculty when I contacted them, I was only able to contact them on the phone but would have preferred the in person visit. Still haven't seen any results posted yet, so fingers crossed.
