  1. There are few pre-recs for epi programs and public health programs in general, but one of the few I've ever seen is two semesters of calc. Although GREs are probably more important, most of them do expect that u will come in with calc or may even require that u take it once u are admitted.
  2. All fabulous questions. It feels like many med schools schools with mph programs (BU chief among them) use the degree to generate revenue. That being said, I got my mph from an excellent state school with a fairly new mph program and I currently have an offer for a phd program in epidemiology and a full time offer for a job in health education and community health. So it's certainly what you make of it
  3. Thanks, can't wait but I have to apply for their GTA positions separately which they hold for incoming grad students, so hopefully I'll get accepted for one of those. Where'd you end up applying and what areas?
  4. Since my PhD specialization will be in epi my focus for courses will be in epi methods like study designs, survey development, qualitative/quantitative biostats analysis. Since it's under environmental health I'll focus my ancillary coursework and research on the spread of disease as it relates to the built and natural environment for issues like ambient and indoor air pollution and how they relate to cancer and heart disease mostly.
  5. PhD. Got accepted into the environmental epi prgram at Colorado State which was my second choice. Very excited, I have to apply seperately for their GTA positions which they hold for incoming students, I think I'm a slam dunk to get one of um but won't be sure if I'm going to go there until I secure funding. Btw the only school I haven't heard from is a SOPHAS school, said my app was completed and "mailed" as of Jan 29th (completed according to them on Jan 22nd) with a deadline of Feb 1. Still haven't heard back
  6. Gettin pretty grim at this point, but perhaps last year was an anomaly and they got all the decisions out early. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking
  7. Feeling the same way, but then again there hasn't been a big wave of acceptances like last year yet. Still starting to wonder a bit though
  8. You've singled out the big dogs in terms of mph programs. What I've found is that it's tough to get funding oppurrunities for mph students. I'm an mph student now and I have a teaching assistanship outside my mph dept. so try and do a little leg work with possible work oppurrunities before you sign on if money is an issue.
  9. Thanks for the inside info. My interests mainly lie in the international infectious disease epi area, not really interested in non-communicable disease epi, hopefully I left a lasting impact with some of my POIs when I spoke to them on the phone. I'm hoping to live within a reasonable biking distance (even though I have a car, I just enjoy it) so I kind of zeroed in on Carboro since I've read that it's a really great place for young grad students and professionals.
  10. Haha, certainly don't think they're doing it on purpose. I know there's year to year variation, just really eager for a decision. Part of my anxiety comes from the fact that since I've been looking into this program I've been able to get in touch with every faculty member I contacted and all the administrators have been helpful any time I contacted them for info. Everyone seems really nice and on top of their jobs which makes me really want to go there. Just tired of waiting. PS I've already looked into housing there to and I get the sense that I'll need to get the ball rolling soon if I want to get a place near campus or in Carboro (sister city).
  11. This is getting crazy, I know the adcom at UNC probably doesn't' pour over the results search on TGC like we do, but the fact that no one has really heard from them yet is driving me nuts. Don't they realize they're "late"? If I don't hear anything today I'm just going to assume I'm not in and wait for my email to tell me otherwise or inform me about my other apps. I need to cut off from the GTC to at least maintain some modicum of sanity.
  12. That's great. I wish I could go to APHA, one of my profs raves about their job fair. But the last meeting was in SF, too much $$ for my blood. Btw speaking at conferences looks great to employers and adcoms, especially if you get funding to pay for it. I'm speaking at a small in state conf and I've heard a lot of positive feedback.
  13. Glad all you policy people are getting decisions, I wonder why it takes the epi people longer. I wasn't under the impression that the app deadlines were any different, at least at UNC.
  14. Congratulations! I to have applied to University of Wisconsin, however it is my understanding that their epidemiology program is now completely separate from their pop health program (epi used to be a concentration), you even have to designate epidemiology separate from pop health in the grad school app phase. Are you aware if any of their epi decisions have gone out yet?
  15. Kind of embarrassing calling to ask, but just had to know. Also they're doing the on campus visit for admits 3/22, so maybe I'll see some of you there IF I get in
  16. Just spoke to one of the UNC-epi administrators. She said that just a few of their decisions have gone out, and that there are still alot of decisions that will be coming out soon. Pretty much from now until March, but I'm expecting that the bulk of them will be in the very near future.
  17. It's funny you mention that, I'm from Indiana I know that IUPUI's PhD program is pretty much brand new so I didn't want to apply there, also my wife really wants to move out of state. Your GREs are a bit low, but then again there are other parts to your application. I have one first author pub and a few department level monetary awards for research. I'm really hoping I made an impression on the UNC faculty when I contacted them, I was only able to contact them on the phone but would have preferred the in person visit. Still haven't seen any results posted yet, so fingers crossed.
  18. Hopefully you'll get in the MCH program and free up a spot for me
  19. Congrats on your interviews! Were your publications as first author? I've heard that goes a long way. Can't wait to hear from UNC
  20. Haha, same. Still waiting, but no news on the forums yet, although I'm sure my number twins will post results as soon as you guys hear back.
  21. Looks like (at least from what I've seen on here) that the UNC-Epi acceptances haven't gone out yet. My guess is that they're waiting till the very end of Jan just like last year, no matter what day of the week it falls on.

  23. When I saw the original post I wondered if I was the one that posted it, lol. I'm getting my MPH in Comm Health/Health Behavior MPH GPA 3.88, V (160) Q (155) AW 4.0. One of the faculty I spoke to at UNC told me about one of her former PhD advisees (at UNC) who had done his MS in MCH (also at UNC) and then his PhD with her, he is now actually on the faculty at UNC and is one of my POIs in addition to her. I feel like there is less an emphasis on being able to do things like math problems but the emphasis is more on performing strong analysis and making good inferences based on the data. I have one published paper and experience with research in foreign countries which I'm using as part of my thesis, so I think I've made up for my non-epi PhD somewhat.
  24. I've been thinking the same thing, we could even be hearing back on Sunday (I think that was the 27th last yr). Your GRE are a bit higher than mine (personally I don't think anyone cares about AW) but our GPA's are the same. I have one journal accepted paper, 2 yrs as a TA, one summer as an RA, and two dept awards that I used to fund my research in South America which will hopefully balance out my lack of 9-5 experience. I've spoken to 7 of the faculty at UNC since UNC is my No. 1 choice and I think there are a lot of great matches there for my research interests, 2 of whom were out in the field in Africa so we Skyped. Everyone that I contacted got back to me to set up times to talk on the phone, I really think that says something positive about the character of their faculty. I hope we meet up there, you sound like a great candidate!
