DBoots Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 This thread may be going dead, but on the question of how long we're supposed to wait, I was in that round of MS admits on 17 Jan. But what about fellowships? If I don't secure a fellowship or RA, there's absolutely no way I can go to Stanford which would be a tad crushing. Here's hoping they just haven't told anyone yet. Do you even get rejects on fellowships?

Do you even get rejects on fellowships? Hi DBoots, Congrats on your MS admit. What I know is that, they won't send any rejects for fellowships. You just have to wait until you receive an email abt fellowship or your admit letter, which is sent by post. As many say its rare to get RA right from first semester. Since you are already admitted I highly recommend you to contact your POI and discuss with them if you can start as RA from first semester. If you could convince them with 50% RA, not only that your tuition fee gets waived off but you also receive good amount of monthly stipend. However, this won't be part of admission process. Otherwise your only hope would be SGF, which should be announced anytime this week.

If you are being reimbursed for travel I can say with 95% certainty that you will be considered for fellowships to cover your first 5 quarters at Stanford or more (I met someone last year who got 3 years covered). I believe last year about 15 people were interviewed for fellowships (there are 3 X 10-minute interviews if I remember correctly) although I don't know how many of us actually received one. I would guess around 10 so only 20% of an incoming class of 50. I can say for sure that I was offered reimbursement during visit day, but I was not offered a fellowship (not even an interview) to cover my first 5 quarters. I hope this helps with future Stanford Aero/Astro graduate applicants that either this myth is debunked, or I was the 5%.
Samuel Low Posted March 6, 2020 Posted March 6, 2020 That being said, I would like to ask if there any Stanford Aero/Astro students in this forum, or possibly even people from the great bunch I met during this year's visit day, on whether they would accept the offer without any funding? It's at least one year of debt (> 80k USD inclusive of living costs) and I am having very mixed feelings about it simply because at present I do not have the financial ability to pay it down. Anyone kind enough to share their thoughts and experiences?
