I've been lurking around this site for a bit and I've noticed that many people have confirmed requests for interviews for Emory's English PhD program. I applied, but was not granted an interview, so I'm wondering if no interview typically indicates rejection/waitlist. Does anyone have any insight? I was admitted to my second choice already and I would like to accept if there's no hope for admission at Emory, but I also don't want to jump to any conclusions.

Any and all insight is much appreciated  :)

Edit: I'm also aware that Emory typically accepts 6-9 students, so does it follow that most people placed on the waitlist were students who interviewed, but were not first admits?

Unfortunately I would say if you didn't get an interview, you aren't likely to get an offer. I applied and got an interview a few seasons ago. From their pool of interviewees they gave offers and waitlisted everyone else (or almost, I'm guessing). Hope that helps, :\

I've applied to Emory two years running now and I was not offered an interview either year.  My understanding is that getting an interview does not mean you are necessarily in and not getting an interview is pretty much an indication that you're out.  Obviously nothing is official until word comes from the graduate director, but it's probably not a good sign.  Sorry, wish I had better news for you.

Darn. I'm definitely a bit disappointed, but I think my second choice is a pretty good option. I did research at Emory the summer after my sophomore year and fell in love so it hurts, but I think I'll have to manage.

Hi Gwendolyn,

I was invited to the Emory interview, and unfortunately, from the sound of things, it sounds like it's very unlikely that a person who didn't get the invite would be accepted or wait-listed. The email said 18 people were invited, and 7-8 people would be admitted out of that pool (or "out of that pool" was certainly strongly implied). It seems like they plan to wait-list a few of us, accept 7-8, and reject the rest.

That's wonderful that you got accepted to Ohio State! I haven't been rejected, but I also haven't been accepted there yet. My app is still being processed. Congratulations!

Thanks for the additional information and congrats on your interview (and acceptance to WashU)!

I don't know anything about Emory in particular, but it is my impression that many programs admit above their target. So perhaps 12 of the 18 would be admitted (for a target of 8), and the other 6 would be wait listed. This is because at most programs they do not have a perfect yield.

That would make a lot of sense. I have heard of people getting straight-out rejected right after the interview, but perhaps, that's unusual. Thanks! This is good news and relieves some stress about the interview.

Hey, everyone! It was great meeting all of you this past week. I see that some acceptances have been posted on the results board, and this tells me that the acceptances have all probably gone out. Could you tell me when you got the calls? Was it just a moment ago, or should I just assume that I'm waitlisted if I haven't gotten a call by now? I'm seriously just sitting and staring at my phone. Thanks!

This may sound creepy, but I interviewed last year at Emory and really enjoyed the people I interviewed with, so can anyone who was there this weekend tell me how the first years are?

:)

I felt like the people were ridiculously nice and awesome. Everyone seemed very genuine. The first-years were particularly nice and helpful, and seemed especially supportive to one another.
