I dont know? I graduated Rutgers-Newark with a 3.86/4 in applied mathematics. However, i did poorly on the GRE. I got a 147 v and 153 Q for a 300 total. What do u guys think? Should I get into a PhD program in Applied Mathematics or Mathematical Science? I'm applying to Binghamton and Drexel.

I could probably take the test again in March for certain Universities but they are not my first choice.

Everything on my application is great except for the GRE. I have a great GPA, LOR, SOP and I have overcome many educational disadvantages like bad urban schooling and coming from a low income family. In general, all things considered : what do you guys think?

As far as i know, if you apply to any math/engineering programs, you are expected to get 90%ile or above in Quant. 153 in Q is very low. Even though many schools dont have any harsh cutoffs, your low Q score would speak negatively of your math skills.

You should retake it.  Here is the link to the GRE diagnostic service that shows you what kind of questions you got wrong on your test. http://www.ets.org/s/gre/diagnostic_service/index.html

Applied to:
UT, WashU. Notre Dame. UWashington.

I think you'll absolutely want to bring those scores up, especially the Quant. Keep in mind, everyone has a "great GPA, LOR, and SOP." You don't want that silly GRE keeping you from remaining competitive.

BTW, props for pushing through your difficulties!!

Thanx for the replies guys. Actually, im embarrassed that i did that poorly on the quant. However, I'm not trying to get into a top program just a good one, around B average. If I had time, I would take it over. The programs I'm looking at my quant is good enough. I don't know??? If I don't get accepted anywhere I'm going to be pissed. I just don't do well on hard time constraints like the GRE.

May I ask why you say this? Have you asked the departments or seen something on their website?

Honestly, a 153Q is low for someone in the Humanities. I'm not trying to crush you, but I want to be honest, since you are asking. I have to imagine this score is extremely low for any programs in Mathematics, and will probably keep you out.

The GRE isn't always the most important part, but it is still important, and Mathematics programs will look at your GRE far more seriously than other fields.

Well, a variety of factors will affect your chances at any of those schools.  If you have time to retake, you should, but if you don't, nothing is stopping you from applying to them.  The GRE is the least important factor of an application.  A bad score can keep you out of some programs, but an outstanding score isn't going to get you in.  Experience, letters of rec, and your SOP are going to pull a lot of weight.

I would look at average GRE, statistics, etc for the programs you're interested in.

I think you should still try.  If you're really worried and not too concerned with top programs, you can always cast a wider net and apply to more "safety schools".

Some math programs have the minimum at 650 and some don't have one at all. Not sure if the average of accepted students is much higher though. I'm emailing to find out. I just don't want to do the process over for nothing. Well, if I do well I can use the scores for next fall but I don't want that. I want to start school as soon as possible. Thanx for the advice guys.
