I got a unofficial acceptance letter that included tuition and stipends, was told to wait for official documents.

Is it rude to NOT call them and learn more about the details? Or should I just wait for official acceptance letter first. I don't want to be labeled as annoying; but then again I don't want to look like I have no interest because it is dream school (UCB).

Anyone have inputs on this?

I got accepted by Berkeley as well~ It is unofficial email as well. I'm still waiting for the official letter. I think if you really want to know some detail know, you can go to the school website and search for current students' contacts and sent them email. Hopefully, they will respond.

I got a very unofficial mail from the director/secretary of the admissions committee of my program in University of Minnesota at Twin-Cities, and here is the reply:

To ease your mind I will let you know you will be receiving an offer soon.  We are just getting final information for the letters before we send them but it should be to you soon.

Congratulations,

XXXXXXXX

I was just wondering if this means I'm really in. The mail seems cryptic for some reason, and I feel uneasy. Would the offer I get be of acceptance? I'm scared, and the last thing you need in an application is being scared.

I've received an unofficial acceptance as well, in that it was over the phone, but was told "You don't need to worry about anything, you are IN." So I'm taking it as real. The fact that your email ended with "congratulations" says to me you are also IN and don't need to worry. :)

Yeah thanks, Linelei. I called them as well, and the secretary recognized me immediately, and said they're waiting to hear from main graduate office, and that I should expect one soon.

I guess we're both in. I am a PhD applicant in chemistry.

I just got an acceptance letter from Berkeley for the Earth and Planetary Sciences Ph.D. program. The letter says that detailed financial support information "will be sent separately," but the letter is official. During a recent visit to Caltech, I was told that I should expect an acceptance letter in the next couple weeks from the ESE program. (I'm in Atmospheric Chem, which is housed in different departments depending on the university.)

Furthermore, a professor at Harvard emailed me this morning to say that I was accepted, provided information about the stipend and an additional fellowship I was awarded, mentioned research and class start dates, and offered to schedule my visit. That's not a notice on official letterhead from the dean's office, but it's official enough for my taste. :)

Do you know which program you will choose to attend?

Is there a big difference in the stipends between the schools?

While I'm confident it'll turn out well for you all I did have a colleague last year who got the same from a POI only to have them call a week later apologizing for a terrible error (my colleagues file was mistakenly placed on the POI's desk and they took that as the school accepted her and so called her).
