mountainhigh Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Does anyone know the strengths/weaknesses of the Biostatistics Phd program at UC Davis vs. the Biostatistics Phd program at UCLA in terms of faculty, research opportunities, and future career opportunities? Thanks so much!!
Biostat_Assistant_Prof Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 I'm not an expert and no much less southern west coast schools than the east coast, but I think UCLA is higher ranked than UC Davis
Shostakovich Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 (edited) Davis has a small department, it's a graduate group in Biostatistics and is part of the Stats department. The program isn't ranked perhaps because it's not a department, just a "group" within the Stats department. On the other hand, UCLA's department is a lot bigger and is considered a top 10 Biostats department. It seems to me that in the recent times the graduates are mostly heading to industry (as opposed to academia) but they seem to be landing decent jobs in either Stats or Biostats. If you have a decision between these two departments I'd go with UCLA like other people have said. http://www.biostat.ucla.edu/public/forms/alumni/07-10a.pdf Edited February 5, 2013 by Shostakovich
cyberwulf Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 There is at least one recent UCLA biostat grad who is doing a post-doc at Harvard, so grads from there can be successful in academia. I think of Davis more as a stat department; don't really know much about their biostat program.
