2013 SLP Admissions Thread!

I'm an undergrad at UVA majoring in Com Dis, and I'm applying to UVA for grad school although it's not my top choice. In my opinion the major positive aspect about UVA's program is the quality of the faculty. Every single professor and clinical instructor I have met has been warm,welcoming, knowledgeable, and willing to help you. If you get in your adviser will probably be Dr. Filip Loncke who is like a gift sent from heaven. He will help you in any way he can and he's so approachable and wonderful. The program takes Track 1 and Track 2 candidates, so if you are a Track 2 (major other than Com Dis) you will have to spend some time taking classes with undergrads. 

 

The reason UVA isn't my top choice is because it's very centered around younger clients, which is fine, but I really want to be able to get more experience with adult clients. I feel like it's not the best fit for me in that regard although I do love it here. Also, as an undergrad you definitely get the whole college experience but I've talked to a couple of grad students who have told me they aren't really connected to UVA at all. They basically stick to one building (where the classes, the professors, and the on-campus clinic are). I'm not sure if all grad programs are like that, but I feel like they're missing out on exploring UVA and Charlottesville, which is an amazing city. There are 2 major hospitals (UVA hospital and Martha Jefferson hospital) and a ton of schools in the area to do clinical placements, as well as the on-campus clinic

 

I'm an older student, so I doubt I'll feel very connected to undergrad life wherever I go. I'm okay with that, but I hope to explore Cville and the surrounding area, especially the restaurants.

The music scene is amazing- if you're a fan of the Avett Brothers, it seems like they come here once a year and there's always shows around $10 at the Southern Cafe and Music Hall and for some reason I've been really lucky and keep winning concert tickets so I've gotten to go to a lot of good shows this year for free. There are so many restaurants that I don't think it would be possible to eat at all of them...my favorites are Little Johns, Belmont BBQ, and Now and Zen but I'm sure you'll find your own favorites.  There's also tons of local artists and musicians...The VA Film Festival is based in Charlottesville every year and I would highly recommend either attending some films or volunteering with it- I've done both and I've gotten to meet some well known actors and directors and I always have a blast. Also a venue called The Paramount on the Downtown Mall (a pedestrian mall) sometimes shows premieres of shows for free on their big screen and they have costume parties and stuff like that. The premiere of Downton Abby (idk if you watch it) was awesome because there were tons of people dressed in period costumes. There are at least 4 main shopping centers (Barracks, Seminole Square, Albemarle Square, and Stonefield) and a Mall within a 15 min drive....And there are mountains to hike, slopes to ski/snowboard...it's really an awesome area. I love VA so much. If you're into history at all it's also a great area for that, you've got to check out Monticello and Ash Lawn. And there are great Vineyards to go to as well...I really can't sing Charlottesville's praises enough. I think people sometimes don't realize that VA has so much stuff to offer...and 4 seasons! a major bonus.  

 

Also everywhere else in VA is usually only a 2.5-3 hour drive. So that includes Washington DC, and Va Beach.

My family doesn't seem to understand that you have to apply well in advance. They keep asking me if I'm starting classes soon. I just want to know where I'm going! Speaking of: has anyone heard anything / know anything about Auburn? The results search is turning up mostly rejections from past years so I have no idea of a timeline. Also it was my only school that required everything by mail so I'm not even sure they got it / are even considering me. This is my dad's and grandparents alma mater so they ask about it even more often.... the next couple of weeks are going to be long ones....

 

I emailed Auburn several weeks ago to confirm that they received my application and that it was complete, and Dr. Moran said results would be out mid to late March.  Good luck!

Sooooo I'm extremely sleep deprived, and I definitely read that name as "Dr. Moron"!!! I was thinking "Yikes, that's a tad harsh!" ahaha. Slowly losing my mind over here =)

Congratulations!!!   I also applied to Adelphi and am now anxiously awaiting to hear back from them. Do you remember when you sent your application?

I feel like they're just sporadically sending them at this point; seems like people hear back at lots of different times. Good luck!!!

I think we will be hearing from Auburn fairly soon, like in the next 2 weeks. Their GTA applications are due the 17th I think, so the will probably have made a decision by them.

Thanks y'all!  Maybe I will go ahead and email Dr. Moran to see if my application is complete as well.  If by some strange circumstance all of my stuff didn't make it there I'd rather know about it now.  Good luck to you both!

 

 

PS: AMarie, thanks for all the great info on UVA!  It's good to hear that you have had a positive experience with the faculty since the faculty usually have a huge impact on my experience and happiness as a student.  Hope you had fun in the snow yesterday!

When is their interview day?  If I don't hear from them at all, I'm going to assume that I'll have to wait until after that day to receive an admissions decision.

haha fair enough- I've only been to Richmond 4 or 5 times myself and basically all I do is go to Short Pump and Cary St....I'm sure there's a lot more to Richmond than that!

There is, but not too much.  If you ever drive through town again on a nice day, I do recommend visiting Maymont Park or Belle Isle.

Ha!  This is definitely a stressful time...but I haven't started name-calling...yet!

I do have something good to say about Marquette...I emailed Dr. Long about my missing letter, and not only did I have a very quick response saying he'd contact the graduate school and ask (and reassuring me that I really was accepted that it wasn't a cruel joke), he really did and I had a very apologetic answer this morning saying they just must have skipped over my name.  Ha! 

 

But it's not always that you see a professor (especially one who has as much on his plate as he does now), at such a big university who actually takes that time, and so quickly.  I've had way worse, and knowing he takes care of his stuff puts Marquette higher on my list of Schools I Cannot Afford But Might Attend Anyhow. 

 

Anyhow, my letter will be in the mail ASAP

 

Now if the rest of those pesky letters would come...hooray for good news Friday!

Wow, that's so sweet of him! It's nice to see a program that treats its potential students that way, makes me believe that it'll only lead to good things for attending students.

I had a nice long cry last night, because at this point I'm feeling like grad school isn't going to happen. Even though I worked so hard for the past 4 years, it somehow doesn't seem like enough now.

My poor mother had to sit there and listen to it, and she's struggling to understand the admissions process as much as I am.

You still have 4 schools to hear back from! UNC-CH is soooooooo competitive, tons of qualified applicants didn't get in. Hopefully you can try not to take that one to heart- the admissions process is super random. Sometimes you get rejected from schools you think you will get into, and sometimes you get accepted to schools that you never thought you could get in to. I am hoping you do get accepted to a school you want to go to, but if you don't the world is not over. I think there are schools that accept spring admission? 

 

 

I just googled "SLP spring admissions" the first link on the page had some good info

Do you feel like your undergrad program prepared you for how difficult the admissions process would be? I know mine didn't.  I went to the dean a few months ago and had a good cry with him along with explaining how mislead I was by the faculty.

I mean, my undergrad program let us know that grad school is extremely competitive and we needed to keep our grades up if we ever wanted to be accepted. But I kept my grades up, I scored fine on the GRE, I held a NSSLHA board position, a peer advising position, and was a member of an honors group. I also had a very related internship. But it seems that no matter how high my grades were, because I took such a rigorous course load (as a double major, no less), I can't compete with those who have 3.98s with a less competitive program and less course rigor.

 

I feel like I was misled by even the programs I applied to (aside from UNC-CH, since I knew that was competitive when I started).

That's great about the letter!  I met Dr. Long at one of the information sessions and he was very personable and accommodating to all- I mentioned that in my SOP for Marquette.  I get the feeling that he genuinely cares about the students- which is awesome because he definitely has a lot going on in terms of his own scholarly activities.   

 

He is going to host the information session for admitted students on March 22nd and I'm hoping to make that one

I think if for whatever reason I can't get in this round, I will apply to UCF for spring admission. I'm not really sure about the competitiveness of that program specifically, and I'll probably have to research the school a little bit more. If anyone knows anything about it, please let me know.

I have the same problem.  I feel like I shot myself in the foot by accepting enrollment into my undergrads honors program.  It is a very frustrating experience.  When I talked to the dean at my undergrad he told me that my only option was to play it up in my SOP.  I know I will make an excellent SLP, I work as a speech and language specialist in a NJ elementary school now, but that doesn't seem to be enough.

Don't give up! You have wonderful stats and experience that will get you into a program. You still have four schools to hear from so do not count yourself out yet. Many schools look on your transcript and see if you challenged yourself with harder course work and they do consider that when looking at your GPA. You will get through this and get an acceptance, I am sure of it.

Thanks! I did find one school with spring admission that I would definitely look into. 

 

Since you're currently at UVA, do you know if they've started notifying? I know they've unofficially accepted a few out-of-field applicants, but I haven't seen anything else.
