History of American Studies/American Cultural Studies/Cultural Studies

Can anyone comment on the history of/between American Studies, American Cultural Studies, and Cultural Studies? How would you describe the overlap and divergence between these fields? 

 

Furthermore, can anyone provide some seminal reading lists (texts, articles, etc.), especially for American Studies and Cultural Studies? I have a smattering of both in my literature M.A. but I'm trying to give myself a comprehensive overview and it's proving difficult.

Throwing an idea out there -- I wonder if spending time on university websites would help distinguish major differences, or assist your comprehensive review any, say BU's American and New England Studies?
