Two of the schools I am applying to are in NYC and I currently live in NYC. Any opinions on whether or not to mention that I live here in my SoP?

One of the draws of the programs is obviously the location and that I want to stay here (though not the main reason I'm applying to them). I feel like it could be beneficial for the admissions committee to know that I already live here, know my way around, and won't be overwhelmed by the city... or it could be totally unnecessary.

Although ultimately the choice is up to you, I wouldn't put it in my SOP. They will already know once they read the general parts of your application, where you list your mailing address. If an interview is required, and they ask what other schools you are considering, then you can mention that this is your top choice due to location. I'm not sure that knowing your way around the city would be the difference maker in your application. Good luck to you!

Yeah, I agree, totally unnecessary. I'm pretty sure 'ability of applicant to adjust to the location' would be somewhere between the kind of car they drive and their astrological sign on the list of things they look for. (Obviously, it's more important to the applicant).

Definitely do not put it in - I do not see any upside, the infomation will be available from your personal information supplied in the application form, and in the worst case it may even back fire (e.g. If the adcom interprets it as "I want to go to XXX University in NYC because I live in NYC", i.e. you risk trivializing your reason to apply to these schools).
