Macabry Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 I just received my MA acceptance from Villanova. I saw one other--anybody want to claim it? Also, does anyone have information about their funding. I've applied for an assistantship, but have not yet heard anything.
caitlee91 Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 I don't think I've put my Villanova acceptance on the board, but I'm in there as well. The e-mail I got from Heather Hicks mentioned that assistantship decisions would be made in mid-March (and emphasizes that we look at funding outside the English department in the meantime). I think they wait a bit to see whether any of their initial offers are turned down. I won't be attending Villanova, though, and will inform them this coming week, but I think you'll hear about funding sometime in the next couple of weeks! Congrats on your acceptance!
BrookeSnow Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 I put my Villanova acceptance on the board. I'm waiting to hear back about funding which should happen in mid-March. If I get funding I will probably attend.
Macabry Posted March 1, 2013 Author Posted March 1, 2013 I'm in the same position about funding. I really want to go there. Does anyone know how likely they are to fund (at least tuition-wise)?
BrookeSnow Posted March 3, 2013 Posted March 3, 2013 (edited) Is anyone going to visit during the weekend of April 13th? Edited March 3, 2013 by BrookeSnow
BrookeSnow Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Macabry, Can I be nosy and ask you to let me know your impressions after the open house?
thestage Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 They should be making decisions next week, per my acceptance letter.
Macabry Posted March 16, 2013 Author Posted March 16, 2013 I heard about funding today via e-mail, and am planning to attend! BrookeSnow 1
khyleth Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 I heard about funding today via e-mail, and am planning to attend! Hooray! Congrats. Hopefully more of us will hear from them soon.
BrookeSnow Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 I heard about funding today via e-mail, and am planning to attend! Congrats that is great!
Macabry Posted March 17, 2013 Author Posted March 17, 2013 Thank you! Did anyone here attend the Open House? (There were only four of us, as far as I can tell...)
khyleth Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Thank you! Did anyone here attend the Open House? (There were only four of us, as far as I can tell...) I wish I could've! Any general impressions you'd like to share?
Macabry Posted March 19, 2013 Author Posted March 19, 2013 I wish I could've! Any general impressions you'd like to share? I attended Dr. Hicks' Postmodern Seminar. It was an intimate setting--capped at 15 students--and highly animated. (We discussed Coetzee's Disgrace). Classes all meet at night (5:20 or 7:30), and 5-6 courses are offered each semester. Students seemed fairly happy, although the grad population was small. Feel free to pm me with any specific questions! Let's just say my first impression was sufficiently good to induce me to submit my "intent to enroll" form! khyleth 1
BrookeSnow Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Macabry- I am planning a trip out to Villanova, in about a week. Any suggestions for things I should check out?
thestage Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Waitlisted for funding. If anyone out there got funding but plans on going elsewhere, please do let them know as quickly as possible!
khyleth Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Waitlisted for funding. If anyone out there got funding but plans on going elsewhere, please do let them know as quickly as possible! Same. Heather Hicks said I was "one of [their] top alternates", but I wouldn't be surprised if everyone gets that line. Here's hoping we all get offers!
Macabry Posted March 19, 2013 Author Posted March 19, 2013 Macabry- I am planning a trip out to Villanova, in about a week. Any suggestions for things I should check out? In all honesty, I only saw the Connelly Center--their student center--and the Arts and Sciences building, where all English grad courses are taught. I stayed at the Villanova Conference Center which is on County Line Road, about five minutes from campus. The rest of the time was spent looking for properties!

I was looking at the Convention center as a place to stay good to know it's really not too far from campus.
squirrelhere Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Hi all- I was accepted into this program and since I am finishing my undergrad at St. Joseph's (right down the road) I took a trip to Nova to get a feel for their program. I was really impressed- Dr. Hicks is helpful, approachable, and very communicative (she actually answers her email! Quickly!) and the more I heard about the program, the more excited I became. They focus a lot of attention on career services for the MA students, since they know not everybody is looking to earn a PhD right away. Dr. Hicks collects the permanent email addresses of all MA grads, and contacts them frequently to come back to Nova and help the current students with career services after graduation. Every student that I spoke with was really happy with the program and had nothing but good things to say about it! I've been waitlisted for funding too, but Dr. Hicks told me that most MA students complete the program without it. Hope this helps! khyleth 1

I'm also wait-listed for funding and trying to make a decision. I have a funded offer for an MA elsewhere but I really love Villanova's program so I'm torn.
