Hey everyone! I'm an incoming English MA student as well. I didn't make it to the thesis symposium due to surgery, but I did visit for the Open House. It looks like a great environment; I'm super excited to start.
Well I accepted an very generous, fully-funded MA offer from Villanova. However, the day before yesterday, I Dr. Jay contacted me indicating that I was "at the top" of Maryland's WL for a PhD, with 5 students yet to respond. I am an utter mess right now. If, by some chance, I get into UMD would it be terrible to renege on Villanova?
I just wish I could have a conclusive answer! I thought I was rejected from UMD this whole time!
Hi Guys!
Congrats to all acceptees. I just had word that I'm at the top of the WL! This is an utter surprise and as I do have a funded MA (tuition and assistantship) offer from Villanova, I would love to know for certain.
In all honesty, I only saw the Connelly Center--their student center--and the Arts and Sciences building, where all English grad courses are taught. I stayed at the Villanova Conference Center which is on County Line Road, about five minutes from campus. The rest of the time was spent looking for properties!
I attended Dr. Hicks' Postmodern Seminar. It was an intimate setting--capped at 15 students--and highly animated. (We discussed Coetzee's Disgrace). Classes all meet at night (5:20 or 7:30), and 5-6 courses are offered each semester. Students seemed fairly happy, although the grad population was small. Feel free to pm me with any specific questions!
Let's just say my first impression was sufficiently good to induce me to submit my "intent to enroll" form!
