It seems we're about at that time where all acceptances and rejections have been received, waitlists drawn up, tears shed, ego-boosts abound, and everyone's freaked out about how they're gonna move across the country ...

We all hold several offers (I'm sure) or an many waiting lists (I'm certain) and are basically confused about our choices. Some visit days are not for another month or so, so it is hard to make a decision right now.

But I do appeal to everyone's sense of responsability towards their fellow linguists. I would never encourage anyone to rush into their decision and accept an offer hastily. I would, however, request those who are on waiting lists for schools for which they are not interested and will surely not attend due to better offers, to withdraw their applications as soon as possible. I do believe it will save much anxiety and sleepless nights for other applicants.

Thank you

Just wanted to state that I followed my own advice, and withdrew two

My two withdrawals aren't top-of-the-line, so I doubt I helped anyone out like some one would with you if they dropped NYU or UMass - but, it's a start to keep the admits flowing.

Several schools are having Open House or interviews in the next week or two; there will probably be a wave of decisions that will free up some waitlists, but you may have to wait a little bit longer before you know.

Michigan State U and UC Boulder have not replied to me yet? So, it's not all schools have replied, right?

Also I got an invitation for an open house meeting that is going to be a discussion of the PhD linguistics program for an hour and a half, Is that an acceptance?

No worries, only one of my schools has sent out decisions. Still waiting on the other three that had later deadlines.

I withdrew from McGill and about a decision between Cornell and UMass i think i'm going for Cornell to work more on computational linguistics than theoretical and i'll withdraw from UMass on Sunday this week (with probability of 90%). It may be a good news for wait-listed people at UMass. I'm still waited in Washington and Northwestern. I would go for big cities but as i'm an international and should go for U.S. Visa sooner i think i'm going to accept Cornell's offer in the next week.

Congrats and good luck! :)

Thank you very much. I hope good admissions and good decisions for everyone.

Just saw there were new posts here - I spoke a little soon; learn from my experience, and I suggest that you do not withdraw until you have paperwork from your choice school :)

Yes, I'm a little afraid now.

I withdrew from UMass and I'm going to attend Cornell.

Welcome! Looking forward to meeting you in August.  We met half of those accepted when we had the open house recently, and they look like a fun group. Congratulations :-)

I see your "offer rescinded" in your .sig and read your post about it. How heartbreaking. You have my sympathies. :-\
