  1. Congrats! Hope you can come to our prospective visit weekend. We go all out for it :-)
  2. I know you're trying to stay out west - and I don't blame you, I'm from the west and I miss it terribly - but here at Cornell, the're very much into interfaces. Just putting it out there. :-D

    FLAS 2013-2014

I just heard back on Thursday. I got the FLAS! woot! Glad I won't be teaching next year. :-)

    FLAS 2013-2014

So I've been hearing that a couple of friends from other schools were offered FLAS. According to my school, though, my particular language area group is awaiting word from the Department of Education about the number of FLAS that can be funded. Though in our language area group, no one has been awarded. On the other hand, another language group from our university has been awarded but it's contingent on funding. It appears to be sequester-related. Is this case for any of you??
  5. I did that earlier. Made me more depressed, tbh. lol
  6. Here, y'all need some calming pictures :-) https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&site=&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1366&bih=653&q=calming+pictures
  7. I see your "offer rescinded" in your .sig and read your post about it. How heartbreaking. You have my sympathies. :-\
  8. Welcome! Looking forward to meeting you in August. We met half of those accepted when we had the open house recently, and they look like a fun group. Congratulations :-)
  9. LSA fellowship results are in and.... I didn't get in. Ah well. here's to Chicago in 2015!
  10. The University of Washington definitely uses post-bac ( https://admit.washington.edu/Admission/Postbac ). UW's Speech and Hearing Sciences department has an official postbac program. Check out U Washington. I don't recall if they have an official postbac program, but I have known a couple of students who were postbacs. A friend of mine had a degree in Spanish, for example. She did her postbac at UW. And now she's in a linguistics program in one of the U California schools.
  11. I was accepted last year (but accepted another offer). The acceptance e-mail mentioned $5,000/semester towards tuition costs. Tuition is $7,038 per semester...
  12. Well, I'm at Cornell so I may be biased... ;-) But one thing I did was look at the list of graduates from the program and see where they ended up. But when all is said and done, it'll depend on you - the research you did and what you have published.
  13. Congrats! Are you coming up here for the visit next month?
  14. I am looking at the fellowships available for participants of this summer's LSA Institute. For the most part, they say they cover tuition. I suppose your mileage may vary and I plan on asking mine if I do get one, but for now, I'd like to know - do departments help cover funding as well?
  15. I'm 32 - but people assume I'm like 25 or something for whatever reason (haha). It's weird, there's one professor a year older than me and one I am older by a couple years. If only I knew what I wanted to do earlier, I woulda been a professor by now!
  16. THanks for the site - but I notice already, no linguistics ones! I think Ah, darn. I will be taking to one of the profs who has experience with the NSF, though I don't think he won the NSF GRFP, though. Still, it'd be nice to have some sample winning linguistics essays though!
  17. Ok, getting into the game late with the NSF GRFP because of a hectic first month of grad school. But anyway, I'm seeing tips here and there for other fields of study but not much (or any) on linguistics. For those of you who have applied (and perhaps have received the fellowship or an honorable mention) - what tips do you have? Or even a website will do. I've been stumped on the research statement. I am not sure how to proceed there, how thorough I need to be. I'm brainstorming, but I could definitely use some guidance. Thanks!
  18. I wish I could trade. In undergrad, school would start close to October. I'm pretty ticked that here, school starts in August. I had to miss PAX in Seattle (a video game festival).
  19. So far, it's like I'm in undergrad and repeating the coursework I did (I guess that's how it goes in linguistics). Except there's meetings and hanging around the department longer (I spent a few hours doing homework there). I had a bit of imposter system the other day when I could not understand what we were doing, but fortunately (lol) other people - even the 3rd & 4th years - were having problems as well. So that was a huge relief. Hearing about people doing the required Ph.D. exams and the qualifying papers and dissertation defense sounds a little intimidating and scary to think, but I'll cross those bridges when the time comes. On the whole, grad school is positive right now. Adjusting to this town and living situation is taking some time, though. Mild culture shock. It's a pretty town, but the isolation is offputting. I come from a large metro area on the other side of the country.
  20. Flying out tonight for a school I got accepted to. 99% certain I'll accept. I just need to see the place and meet the people before committing! So excited & nervous! gaaah! I'll update you guys later this week.
  21. Something to consider... Vancouver is close to Seattle, home of Microsoft, Nintendo, Amazon.com, Big Fish Games, Pop Cap games, and more. We also have three Google offices and Facebook.
  22. I have a complicated relationship with English, and I'm a native. I think this is why we want to become linguists, to find out what the hell's wrong with us... ;-P
  23. You think that with the advent of the internet, you can just give a special password to the school and they can look it up ... Rather than ETS sending the CD with the scores for $22. It's a racket, I tell you! Don't mind me, I am bitter after spending a bundle on sending scores... lol
