  1. My Spanish accent is similar haha.. While I was focused on learning a particular variety of French, I had no such focus with Spanish and I was exposed to a variety of Latin American accents (though primarily exposed to Mexican & Puerto Rican). Spanish speakers remark I sound pretty close to native but they can't put their finger on where I am from - somewhere in Latin America, just not their country lol
  2. I am anal about accents in any language. hahaha. :-) Pretty cool! I studied Quebec French. I speak (or at least, I think!) French in a Quebec accent.
  3. Es-tu Québécois(e) ?
  4. My friend's husband works for Microsoft and, naturally, he's a huge computer geek. I approached him for advice when I needed to buy a laptop. He was like "Go Lenovo! They're really sturdy!" My friend points out that there are like 6 lenovo laptops in heir house! And yeah he's right - it's sturdy, I like it. Also, if you, God forbid, drop the laptop or it gets shaken violently, the hard drive will sense it and protect itself until it feels safe. The drawback is that it's a bit heavier. But I don't really mind. I play MMORPGs so I like that it's bulkier... I may buy a smaller laptop or a tab somewhere down the line if I find myself carrying a lot of stuff.
  5. 1. I have a Lenovo laptop too. I prefer desktops though and have long avoided laptops until burglars broke into my house and took my desktop. So I bought something that I can bring with me & keep an eye on at all times. Anyway, I think it was adequate. I am thinking I may need more stuff for higher level phonetics stuff. 2. I started using Microsoft One Note during my last quarter of undergrad. It connects to MIcrosoft's servers so I was able to share my notes with classmates if I wanted. If I had to draw anything, I can try to draw it in one note or I just used old fashioned pen & paper. And IPA works fine with MS One Note. I typed it using the IPA keyboards available (weston ruter & character picker)... For syntax, I would probably use a stylus or something.
  6. I heard from all of the programs I applied to now. U Hawaii was the last one, though they can only offer me the MA program, not the Ph.D. Who posted their result from UH? I saw "decent" funding. Does that mean it's more than the $10,000/year tuition waiver (when tuition is currently $13,392?)
  7. I mainly see it in sociolx. But I have seen it used in other subfields... not really common. But I use it myself!
  8. Awww.. that sucks. I hope you get in one way or another (there's always next year if this year doesn't work out - just look at me). And why exactly did your advisor point out the C-? Or maybe I should first ask - how did he point it out?
  9. Wow, really? I thought it was a typo. Hah, that's pretty unusual. Usually schools cite the number of applicants to a particular program instead...
  10. *looks at results board* Wow, who knew Yale's program was that popular? ;-P
  11. Cornell sent funding info with the acceptance letter.
  12. Which one of you posted the UH Manoa result?
  13. While we wait for more grad schools to hear back from - here's a question.. What languages have you studied, specialize in, or worked on? Or even speak (I was avoiding that question.. but there it is!). lol I'm into Western Austronesian languages, Romance languages, some other Indo-European ones here and there, and just getting into Semitic ones (I took Modern Hebrew and now I have my eyes on Arabic). Plus East Asian languages. You?
  14. Congrats!! :-D
  15. It's hard to say without knowing what other people received.
  16. I'm reading old threads and saw this. How tragic. I Googled her out of curiosity and came across these. It's been a year. May she rest in peace. http://blogs.laweekly.com/informer/2011/02/hannah_bartle_asu_dies_405_crash.php http://english.clas.asu.edu/accents2011s-bartle
  17. Took a while, but I finally heard from UMass Amherst. And it's a rejection. Ah well. Two more schools to hear from!
  18. Ah. Thanks. I'll try not to read into what this (read: STRESS, OBSSESS) could mean for me. lol.
  19. Ugh. I'm sorry, Elizabeth. I feel your pain - strings of rejections are no fun. Though, the way I look at it - at least it makes my decisions on where to go easier! haha ;-) Also Were you the one who posted the Amherst one? Mine still says "applied." But something about not being notified until 21 days later if it's a rejection?
  20. Will do! You didn't apply to Georgetown? I think they have a good applied linguistics program. I'm more into the theoretical side myself ( phonetics & phonology) though I'm also into the experimental side (phonetics) and sociolinguistics.
  21. Well, UCLA rejected me. :-( Congrats to those of you who got in.
  22. Yeah, MA.
  23. I got that e-mai too! I see people posted rejections from UW.
  24. Darn. :-\ Congrats to you though!
  25. Congrats! :-D
