theory_junky Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I am so relieved that I'm not the only one stuck in this infuriating state of limbo. I can't help but try to analyze every tidbit of gesture (or lack thereof) from admissions people and it's bringing the Dr. Phil out of me in a scary way. So...I got my rejection from Duke today, and it didn't sting all too much, as I didn't expect to get in anyway. But at the moment, I'm waitlisted at UC-Davis, and UPenn is a big question mark of helll...... For UC-Davis, I corresponded with them sometime early last week, and I'm wondering if it might be pester-ish to contact them again and see where I am on the waiting list? I have this horrible mental image of the admissions committee person seeing my email, rolling the eyes all "NOT AGAIN!" style, then setting my application aflame in the wastebasket. As for UPenn, I received no indication as to whether or not I was on a waiting list, just that results will be sent out on the 16th. Is this a bad sign? Is it safe to assume that if I wasn't said to have been put on a waiting list, then I'm not? AGHHHH!!!!!!! Oh yeah....I think I'm losing hope for the waitlist thing at UC-Davis because when I told my advisor about it at school he kind of raised his eyebrows "oohhh!!...there's still....hope?" in a no chance in hell kinda way. I am glad that if I don't get in anywhere this year then at least i can blame economic misfortune..... However for UC-Davis I can't help but hope for it because I got an excellent recommendation from a professor that told me they're looking to branch out for a new subfield (mine being arabic literature, translation, poscolonialism and border studies). For UPenn I was in contact with a professor who showed interest in working with me, and he is a big DAWG all caps in the areas I'm interested in. Does anyone have any ideas about how such factors going to make any difference at this point? Sigh......
immersion Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 whose the professor at Penn...I can tell you what to think..
wrappedupinbooks Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I wanted to say hi back. I'm new too. Freaking out too. Also in wait-list-limbo. Welcome!
LOLhedgefunds Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 You referenced UPenn mailing decisions on the 16th, and you (I think this is you) posted on the results board something about them having a 'second round of acceptances' that will be released at the same time. On what are you basing this information? I had the impression that they had already notified _all_ of their admits. I hope I'm wrong
theory_junky Posted March 12, 2009 Author Posted March 12, 2009 ok, so im basing this on wishful thinking, and the fact that i contacted an admissions person a week ago about an update on my application, and i didn't get a big fat NO. my hopes are dwindling.....
sundv004 Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I don't think it's pester-ish at all to politely ask your position on the waitlist, especially if they haven't told you. That's important info. to have, and it assists a lot of students in making better decisions in a more timely manner (which, in effect, could help other waitlisted students). I'm on the University of Florida waitlist, but the DGS was kind enough to let me know that I was at the bottom and that it didn't look good. That's not the best news, but at least it keeps me from developing false hope. Good luck! (Aren't waitlists almost, in their own way, worse than outright rejections?)

(Aren't waitlists almost, in their own way, worse than outright rejections?) thank you, sundv004. the uncertainty is quite awful. i have to admit though, on some level, im waiting for finals to be over before contacting uc-davis (should i not hear from them before then). it's my last shot, and upenn isn't looking very good, so I'd rather have the rejection at a better time. i mean, if they're going to take their sweet ass time with this, i might as well make the best of it
theory_junky Posted March 17, 2009 Author Posted March 17, 2009 so i spent hours upon hours doing research that is due friday, only to lose it all because of a computer glitch. no rejections yet, but im going over the edge. yes, i am totally emo righ tnow. just can't win.
