bemb12 Posted April 2, 2013 Posted April 2, 2013 (edited) Hi all, I got an email acceptance from Montclair State today! I'm super excited because I really did not want to pay for school in NYC. Anyway I am curious to anyone who might know what the grad school leans toward--medical or educational speech path? Is it possible to get placed in a medical setting for clinicals? Good luck to all! Undergrad GPA: 3.86 GRE: 146/168/4.5 Edited April 2, 2013 by bemb12

CaramelLatte Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Thank you soo much!! I do feel very relieved for the first time in a year lol.... how has the process been for you, still waiting on any schools?? YES!! I'm still waiting on Hofstra and Adelphi. I called both schools today and they said my application is still in review. It is very annoying, I have not been accepted to any other schools, so I'm banking on these two but I won't hold my breath...lol!! Go celebrate your acceptance! YAY!! I remember you saying this is your 2nd time around applying, is there anything you did different this time? Did you re-take the GRE? That may be my first step if I don't get in this year.

orangeSLP Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Finally, someone who is excited about NYU! Those are my sentiments exactly when it comes to NYU but everyone keeps bringing up the loans and all this rumored bad news about the program. I'm really excited for Thursday too! Definitely excited about NYU! Good to hear you agree! And congrats hopefulslp88, from one re-applicant to another! It takes a lot to go through this process again, and I am so happy for you that the hard work and commitment to this field has paid off for you too. It just goes to show, if you really want something you have to do everything possible to make it happen! mystiqueSLP 1
tlsstc Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Thank you so much!!! I literally started to sob when I read the email. This was my second year applying...it just goes to show don't give up on your dream!!! Oh wow - congratulations! Your perseverance was worth it!

This whole process definitely did take so much out of me, the last year has been a tense and stressful one, but I would do it again in a heart beat because an SLP is what I was meant to be!!!!
hopefulslp88 Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Oh wow - congratulations! Your perseverance was worth it! Thanks so much!!!! It has definitely been a roller coaster of a year!
Anuradha Murti Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 I definitely know that CUNY Lehman, Queens, and Brooklyn require interviews. I am not sure about Hunter, I don't think they do but I could be wrong. I did my undergrad at Brooklyn College, if anyone has questions. Hi! I'd love to know about Brooklyn College - I just got accepted to their grad program, and have to decide between them and Hunter. Many thanks!

hopefulslp88 Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Rejected from Hunter...not surprised though. Congrats to those accepted!!!!!
Lane67234 Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Ditto on Hunter. I've got a lot riding on the Lehman decision (scheduled to be out on Friday). Feeling pretty emotional about this whole process. Kudos to those of you who've had the perseverance to go through this multiple times. Your determination is inspiring.
slpgal123 Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 I'm with all of you on the rejection from Hunter! Haha. I think at this point the only school I'm waiting on that I'd consider is Brooklyn College. I've narrowed it down to Brooklyn, UConn, and Montclair at this point (if I don't get into Brooklyn then I'm down to UConn and Montclair). I'm really not sure what I'll decide; I'm extremely conflicted. I actually didn't realize until looking into it more that Montclair was a 2.5 years + 2 summers program. UConn's 2 years + 1 summer. Not sure how much that'll affect my decision, but it's a factor I'll have to think about. Gotta love this whole process haha.
tlsstc Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Also rejected from Hunter I sense a trend I haven't heard ANYTHING from BK and I haven't heard from Queens since my interview so I am guessing those will also be rejections. I've been a city employee for 10 years - I was hoping one of the CUNYs would do me a solid and accept me. Oh well. I am just so thankful that I have 2 options that I am excited about! On another note, does anyone know about getting the NY teaching certification if you get your SLP master's out of state? I know that there are certain education class requirements that are not really offered anywhere except schools in NY state. I have spent some time on the State Education website but I cannot figure it out - I might give them a call.
ald360 Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 same here on hunter, kinda just happy to hear something after all this time! i didn't realize either that montclair's program was so long -- it's a little hard to tell exactly what the structure of the program is like from their website. i also didn't find much or ever hear much about their clinical affiliations. wishing everyone the best in their decisions, it's almost unreal how many factors there are to consider!
