Kayla123 Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Anyone out there either thinking about doing the military thing and grad school (or are you doing it already)? I'm hoping to get into the Navy's Health Sciences Scholarship program for environmental health and then go on active duty afterward. Air force is on the table too. seems like a great opportunity, jw if anyone else was going down that road
juilletmercredi Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 I have a few friends on HPSP. One of them is in social work; he's studying to become an LCSW and then go into the Air Force to serve military members who need clinical mental health services. I also have a few friends/acquaintances who have done HPSP in clinical psychology. Everyone I know in the program loves it; I tend to hang around the military psychologists and public health officers at conferences and they are the nicest people. I've thought about joining the Reserves, but every time I talk to recruiters there are no jobs in what I want to do or what I am trained for.
Kayla123 Posted March 12, 2013 Author Posted March 12, 2013 yeah I'm running into that problem too not sure if it's because of the current budget stuff or if they simply don't have any openings anyway. Super frustrating. I did 2 years of ROTC and left before I had to sign my contract...just didn't feel ready to commit to serving for 7 years...now that I've had some time to think about it and research, I decided I really do want to go down the military road, at least for awhile. Don't know if I should hang on and wait another year to apply or if I should just go and do some other random job for awhile. I guess at the end of the day, it is really about what the air force/navy needs... just wish it lined up with what I want in terms of careers.
Kadisha Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 As some one that's currently in the military and is witnessing the effects of budget cuts and sequestration and the dovish policies of the Obama administration, don't do it. And if you're going to do it then hopefully you'll be doing it to serve your country and not the money because things are going to get more rough as we withdraw out of Afghanistan and Obama continues spending our money on giving illegal immigrants more rights and subsidizing the poor instead of educating our military men and women. Excuse my little rant, it's St. Patty's day. I've had one too many stouts, and I've been up for nearly 36 hours ProfessorChaos, abeilles, BerenErchamion and 2 others 5
