Velasquezmora Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Anybody out there joining UT Austin this fall / 2013?
tarrman Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Not sure, but strongly considering it. CommNetS track in the ECE department.
functor Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I'm most likely attending UT Austin for math. I've heard lots of positive things about the uni, the department and the city, so I'm quite excited!
Velasquezmora Posted March 8, 2013 Author Posted March 8, 2013 (edited) Nice for both of you! What about housing? what are you looking for while living in Austin? Another question. I am an international student and I do not know very well regarding external fellowships. I have already got a RA for the first year (continuity in RA depends on GPA and work, whch sound that it is ok as it will depends on me). Anyway, is there any other funding source? how do I apply? I asked the grad coordinator of my department and he said I have nothing to do, I have just to wait until the results come out to know if I get some other source of funding, it is right? Thanks a lot for any advice. Edited March 8, 2013 by Velasquezmora
tarrman Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 They have fellowships for incoming students , but you have to be nominated for them. The graduate coordinator is right; everything is out of your hands. Did he say when the results will be released? Haven't thought much about housing, but I heard it was cheap.
functor Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 (edited) Nice for both of you! What about housing? what are you looking for while living in Austin? The city guide some information about housing. It's still rather early but my preliminary thoughts are to try to get a 1 bedroom apartment in Hyde Park (north of campus). From what I understand Hyde Park is a quiet and reasonably nice area, not too far from campus, where many graduate students choose to live. Edited March 8, 2013 by functor
Velasquezmora Posted March 9, 2013 Author Posted March 9, 2013 @tarrman he did not say anything about when the results will be released. So I think for the moment we should just wait. What could be considered a reasonably stipend to live in Austin (single, no children)? @functor thanks for the guide!. I just received an email of a friend of mine who lived there and told me that the best places are north campus and west campus, and he recommended me to avoid east campus (pretty loud). Have you ever think on applying to any of the 3 complexes operated by UT? I should be fine, dont you think so?
neurophila Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I am! Accepted my offer to the Neuroscience Program already.
Velasquezmora Posted March 9, 2013 Author Posted March 9, 2013 neurophila, congrats! when are you joining UT? Master or PhD?
sculptress Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I'll most likely be there in the fall, MFA Sculpture.
MPPgal Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Might be going next year MPP at LBJ school! @VelazquezMora Im international and got some awesome fellowship, but they also have finaid for internationals, if you are Latin American check out the good neighbour scholarship!
MPPgal Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Also UT has an average you need to show before they issue your visa documents...it's about 15 k a yr
Velasquezmora Posted March 10, 2013 Author Posted March 10, 2013 @MPPgal you mean also having some source of fund for the first year in addition to the financial aid letter already submitted by the university? Aorund how muhc would be a normal, lets say, safe stipend for living in Austin (considering a single with no children)
neurophila Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 PhD. I guess I'll be arriving in August, possibly earlier. Moving from Philly, so it's gonna be a big transition, not sure how it'll work out.
looking_to_sea Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 beginning the MPAff program at LBJ in June! Reason it is so early is that I never took Calc, so I am enrolling in the summer I quant course to meet the requirement. Kind of racking my brain trying to get so much done (like find an apartment) within the next few weeks...
sdt13 Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 I may be joining the Educational Psychology PhD program. I will be visiting in about a week to get a feel for the culture, as I will be moving from upstate NY. So far I've looked into the Hyde Park area as well, and it looks really nice. I'll definitely be asking aroud and checking out different housing options when I visit.
gooseberry Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 I am going to UT Austin in the fall for a Masters program in the Jackson School of Geosciences! They're supposed to be making a Facebook group after April 15 to help us find roommates so I'm waiting for that. I'm trying to live somewhere north of Austin to be closer to the research campus. I'd also like to adopt a dog when I get there, haha.
Cooleggyh Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Hey guys! How is your apartment hunting going? Is someone considering living in some multi-bedroom place? I feel they are always cheaper and better than single-bedroom. I am a male from China, but spent my undergrad years in HongKong, Philadelpha, Ihaca and Waterloo. I am outgoing but do not like parties at my own place. Love music and play the guitar. Love movies but not the Hollywood type. Do not have a car but plan to get one in the second year at Austin. Looking for someone to share a rent.
biscuits Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 I'll be arriving mid-July to join the LBJ School! Still not sure what I'm going to do about housing. No matter what, it will be cheaper than Boston, which is a great relief! I am going to be trying not to adopt a dog, gooseberry - two cats is enough for now - but I will totally be snorgling other people's puppies.
phieuxuatkho Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Hi you guys, Did anyone find your room in UT Austin? Can you please share some information/experience? I really appreciate your nice help!
