`jah Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I've been admitted to Duke, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, and UCSD for an MS in biomedical engineering. Which grad program would you guys recommend? I have no interest in obtaining a PhD or working in academia. I want to instead work in industry in an entrepreneurial/start-up environment in the future, focused on designing medical products. I have plans to apply for an MBA a few years down the road in the hopes of obtaining a management role. Thanks!
EngiNerd-12 Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I think Duke and UCSD would be my top choices for Biomedical Engineering. I personally would go with UCSD because of the great program, location/weather, and being in the center of the biotech/pharmaceutical world.
clamofee Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Congrats! Of all your admits, Duke has the biggest name for BME (though UCSD and Columbia are pretty good). I assume that this MS is unfunded? I'd probably go to Duke because cost of living in Durham is so low!
`jah Posted March 14, 2013 Author Posted March 14, 2013 Yep, all of the master's programs are unfunded. Duke, UCSD, and Columbia are two-year, thesis programs. Yale and Cornell are one-year, coursework-only programs. The reason I'm considering Yale and Columbia even though they're not as well known for engineering, is because of my future MBA aspirations. I was thinking that an "ivy-brand" school might help my chances with the MBA application. Any thoughts on this?
EngiNerd-12 Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 Are you interested in research? If MBA is your next goal, then I would say go with the one-year coursework-only programs, since you don't really need a thesis at that point.
`jah Posted March 15, 2013 Author Posted March 15, 2013 I'm neutral towards research. I like it, but don't love it hence I'm not doing a PhD. I'm really only interested in the two-year thesis option because I've read/heard that a thesis is better for finding a job right out of school - and that job will be a BME job, not a business management job.
budgie Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 UCSD has really good industry connections since it's located in the heart of a biotech hub
kaush2990 Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 I have the same ambitions as 'jah and to add to it I am an international student.. I have got admits from UCSD, SUNY stony brook, Duke and Georgia tech! I would like to work after MS ( i am being partial to UCSD).. Though i am not so soure about the job scenario :|
