Contacting department forapplication status, who to contact?

I am debating whether I should contact my POI, the grad director, or just the general department email in reference to my application status?  Any advice or suggestions?

I've emailed the graduate directors when needed, or otherwise the admin from whom most email contacts have come. In 4 out of 5 instances, I have gotten very swift, friendly, and kind replies (though not all with good news) ...

I just emailed along the lines of 

"I was wondering whether I might check on the current status of my PhD application for Fall 2013, or if you might have any indication of when final decisions will be sent out. [Thank you for your time, etc, etc]"
