earl.palamino Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 (edited) they finally sent out rejections. 3 months later, and no responses to any of my calls or emails to check my status. i feel really disappointed not because i didn't get in (i knew i didn't get in because i didn't get interviewed), but i am really disappointed that they don't even bother to send out an email. after all the hard work and effort, they sent me to a webpage and delivered a form letter. even a mail-merged email would be better than sending me a note to go retrieve a rejection. this is crap. the message it sends is that they got who they wanted for whatever reasons they had, and whatever it is that i was hoping for, it just didn't matter. i find it just plain disappointing. so many other schools handle themselves so much better. not cool, columbia. eaboo316 Posted March 14, 2013 Posted March 14, 2013 I totally understand how you feel. :/ I did not get rejected from Columbia but another school in which I paid over $200 for the application (!!). Thankfully, it was one of the few fees I had to pay. BUT, regardless of that large fee, I was not able to find out I was rejected until I contacted the program director who was quick to respond and say I was rejected in one short sentence of about 15 words. I Another bad part is, that they are planning to send out "official" letters at the end of March, so they already know the decisions yet they just wait to tell people, which I think is terrible considering the fee everyone pays. I know a lot of schools do this, but I was really turned off by this particular school because the correspondence I have had with other schools have been great (even if I was rejected they were really nice and wished me well), while the people at this school just sounded indifferent and uncaring. Totally turned me off. Anyways, just wanted to say I know how you feel. It is really frustrating, and I know the rejection is really disappointing, but that just means you have so many more opportunities somewhere else that may be even better for you. Keep your head up and good luck!
cloudless_climes Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 So ask yourself, would you REALLY want to go to a program that is so overtly inconsiderate (and borderline unethical - this causes psychological strife) of its applicants?
Guest joshw4288 Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Many schools do this and many schools have to send out hundreds of rejection letters to half of which were unqualified applicants to begin with. How do you think they feel? Decision deadline is not until April 15 so technically they still have another month to make decisions. Can you imagine if every single applicant expected to get an email or a phone call back every time they wanted to "check-in" and see what their application status was? I'm sure the admissions staff would just love to make hundreds of phone calls a day to say "The letters will be sent when we finish reading the hundreds of applications we received. The deadline is April 15, expect a notice by then." Think about whether a school would really want to admit someone that can't be patient and wait for a decision in the given timeframe. Not to mention, applications are submitted online now so what is wrong with receiving an online admissions decision? Perhaps they should go back applications in packet form sent with certified mail and a money order so they don't have to receive impersonal online applications from impatient applicants. So much complaining on this site.
cloudless_climes Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Truthfully, a mass email at the time of decision would be just as difficult as a mass email weeks after decisions had already been made...weeks after candidates knew of their standing with TC - this would mitigate the hundreds of phone calls problem. But I guess a mass email is exponentially more difficult than an online letter?
earl.palamino Posted March 18, 2013 Author Posted March 18, 2013 yes. letting people know on a timely basis is really they least they owe us. they had our applications for more than three months. no sympathy for a massively endowed school that plays the ratings game as much as anyone else. basic simple consideration in response from a clinical psych program is not much to ask. otherwise, make the application FREE. cloudless_climes 1
lindzardz Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 Hey OP- I totally understand your frustration. This waiting game is nonsense and I'm really hating this part of the application process. Question though- did you get rejection through the online portal? I'm trying to check my status but I'm just not seeing anything. Do you have a link?
earl.palamino Posted March 20, 2013 Author Posted March 20, 2013 yes, they sent me an email telling me to "check my status online" -- once you sign onto the portal, there's a link that takes you to a status page -- i don't have the link any more -- but if you did not interview and you have not heard anything, 99.99% they rejected -- boo, columbia, bad form!!
coffeekid Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Ha! Anyone else who applied to the Clinical Psych PhD get accepted to the masters in general psychology? There's no funding information, but I'm doubting it's very good.
earl.palamino Posted March 20, 2013 Author Posted March 20, 2013 masters programs are about making money for the school, not about giving money to students. not a nice trade to offer the rejects. columbia will give money for masters degrees when pigs fly.
PsychGirl1 Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Anyone hear about their status post-interview?
