I have fulfilled the stats component at LBJ, but never took Calc. Thankfully there are options in place, and if worst comes to worst, I suppose I will just have to enroll in the summer course they offer (and pay out of pocket), but I was wondering if there was anyone on here that could possibly point me to a reasonable online/accredited calc program or speak of their experience with such a course? Any other admits facing a similar dilemma?

I need to take a stats course for USC. At this point, I'm thinking I'm just going to suck it up and take it at the local CC since I need the review and want to just get it out of the way. Math in general is weakness, although I liked stats before, and so I think in person will be better for me than an online course. This basically means no summer for me (and less work hours), such is life.

You're right. I didn't see it because I was looking under the math listings. It compares favorably with the cost of community college considering I wouldn't have to go to class 4 days a week. YEAH SUMMER

Where did you apply/get into neighbor?

looking_to_sea, I am trying to get the stats requirement for the MGPS program at LBJ.

Does anyone have experience or advice about taking an online stats class in a country outside of the U.S.? I will be in South Korea until August so I don't have the choice of taking a community college course or online course in the U.S.

For Independent Study, I am supposed to take the final exam with an education officer at the embassy. The embassy in Seoul is 2 hours away and I don't know if they will allow me to reserve someone on a Saturday just to get my online credits done.

HALPPP me, please.

I am also going to LBJ and need to fulfill the calc requirement. I considered taking an actual course at a local college, but thought better of it after seeing the costs (the book alone is $200). Instead I've decided to do an online calc course for free through Coursera/Khan Academy and then take the validation exam in August. Requires more self-motivation for sure, but I'm hoping the fact that it's free will be enough to keep me on track...

It sounds like this is the best option! I am probably going to Austin and I was an econ major who took like 3 calc courses so I offer myself as a free teacher who anyone who needs it during camp LBJ (other than trig function derivation, the rest I am good at), sorry but stats is just not my strong suit got a horrible C+ (worst grade in college by far) in econometrics (apparently that is enough to get over the prerequisites but it is still terrible), so I am taking an online class to freshen up to get over the prerequisites but it is still terrible), so I am taking an online class to freshen up!

I am doing the self study. Free and probably more entertaining as I watch reality tv while doing it.

Here is an email from LBJ about the statistics requirement for the MGPS program:

As for your questions about your “statistics” preparation for our curriculum.  Here’s a few suggestions for some online courses you might consider:

http://www.statistics.com/intro-stats-for-credit/#register  (Statistics.Com)

http://extension.berkeley.edu/catalog/course26.html  (UC-Berkeley)

http://courses.webhost.utexas.edu/dec/college/coursedetails.cfm?CourseID=539  (Stats for Psychology via UT-Extension)

http://www.universalclass.com/i/course/learn-statistics-101.htm?gclid=CP_j2N7akLYCFY6PPAodlVMAbQ  (Universalclass.com)

http://www.phoenix.edu/courses/qnt351.html  (U. Phoenix online Business Stats)

Any of these online courses provide the necessary material to get you ready to start our first quantitative course in the MGPS program.  I would ask that when you satisfactorily complete the selected course, you provide us (Prabhu) with a certificate of completion, grade report, or some other verification.

If you are not in a position to register for a formal online course, you can study the stats on your own and then take my “validation” exam when you arrive here in August.  The material (topics) you’d want to cover would include:

1.      Basic Probability concepts.

2.      Descriptive Statistics

3.      Sampling and Estimation (e.g. Sample Sizes, Confidence Intervals, etc.)  -

4.      Intro to Inferential Statistics such as (hopefully at least one, and hopefully two, of the following):

a.      One-sample hypothesis tests (of means and/or proportions)

b.      Intro to Simple Linear Regression

c.      Intro to Design of Experiments and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) (not req’d for MPAff or MGPS)

If you elect to study on your own and take a shot at my validation exam, then some good resources to help you study on your own would be:

-        The Kahn Academy (http://www.khanacademy.org/)

-        http://onlinestatbook.com/

-        http://davidmlane.com/hyperstat/

As Prabhu had indicated, you do not need to have any Calculus preparation for the MGPS program.

I will take the risk and study on my own. There's also a statistics course with udacity that seems to be good and sufficient.
