lukj Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Hi all, I have offers to UMich's MA Stats program, and Duke's Master's in Statistical and Economic Modeling program. None of them are funded at the moment, and they cost roughly the same in tuition. It's apparently easy to get a TA/RA job at Duke, but they don't really pay enough to offset the tuition. My question is, are there many TA or RA positions available at Michigan for Applied Stats students? Being able to get one of those would definitely make the decision easier, since they come with a stipend and tuition waiver. Thanks!
Lelouch Lamperouge Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 (edited) I'll say there are many TA positions available at Michigan for Applied Stats Masters based on what I know. Because the number of undergraduates there is huge and there is a course called STATS 250 which is the required course for many undergraduate majors; lots people take that course every term and there are many sections for that course. The PhD students there are not enough to take all the TA positions in STATS. Of course, you need to have a good academic record (like high undergraduate gpa, I guess) to get a TA position. I have a good friend there in the Applied Stats Master program. She has been a TA for the past year and She tells me that if you get the TA position at Michigan, it is enough for you to cover the living cost there. Also, the tuition is waived for TA. I am not familiar with the policy in Duke. Wish this is helpful for you. Good luck! Edited March 21, 2013 by Lelouch Lamperouge
