Hi All,

I'd like to start a discussion regarding the possibility that we get NO funding from outside fellowships/scholarships. Say for example we are accepted into a graduate program (phd) with funding from the university, but when it comes around to seeking funding for dissertation research, we never get anything.

Is this a necessarily bad, dooming thing? Will it ruin chances for getting a job later? Clearly it doesn't always mean our research is not valuable or important, since it's just not possible that all good applications will get funded. But I'm wondering what are the implications for future research projects, future grant seeking and, especially, future job seeking at the end of the PhD.

Any thoughts?
