I've been accepted and will decline the offer, probably tomorrow or so. So that's at least one. Hope it works out - really strong department with many, many good people.

Then why are you declining? :)

B/c I can only go to one school at a time.

look before you leap. if it were an issue of pure philosophical pleasure i'd rather go to loyola than most of the leiter-ranked schools. but unless you're that good, it spells doom in five years.

Loved the heart-stopping email from Loyola today that was formatted like a formal letter, beginning with my address and "Dear DemonDeac:"....

apparently my application is complete and " The committee is still in the process of reviewing applications and making decisions." Not sure what the implication of "still" is, I wonder what I can read into it... :D

Well I know two people who are in Medical School (MD) with biology degrees from Bob Jones,

I hope that any merciful powers left in the universe will converge to prevent those two from being gynecologists. You can major in Misogyny at Bob Jones, can't you?

It's hard to hate women when you can't even walk on the same sidewalk; at Bob Jones they have blue and pink sidewalks, you can do the math :D .

Achowa00, do you have any idea how many spots Loyola has or will accept? I don't really have any info on them, so I can't even begin to rank the relative probability of acceptance.

No clue. I've heard that funding is more of an issue there than anything. It's probably my last choice as far as fit is concerned, but I'm pretty sure I already secured a solid rejection from them, re: forgetting to edit an important detail of my statement of purpose. Ah well.

I don't want to rain on anyone's Loyola parade, but I just wanted to offer some cautions before you accept any offers.

They're in the midst of some serious reorganization. They are strongly emphasizing Bio-Ethics going forward. Be sure to check their course offerings and their faculty to see if you really want to go there. There has lately been a diminishing availability in Ancient, Contemporary Continental, and a few other areas. There are good people there, don't get me wrong. But it might be hard to create certain kinds of committees for your doctoral work there in the next few years. Look before you leap!

Yeah, I couldn't find any course listings for future years, only the ones from this past year. Are there any big faculty moves on the horizon? I'm also guessing you're at Loyola, Gorgias? I'd love to hear a little more, especially since my interests are mainly in contemporary continental and philosophy of religion.

Now, philosophy of religion should be pretty doable there. They've got Paul Moser and Kieth Yandell, both big into philosophy of religion.

I am indeed there now, but I shouldn't say too much, you know, for fear of revealing myself... the course offerings over the past year are typical of my time at Loyola. Andrew Cutrofello is big into continental (great guy, very hands on helping grad students with advice), as is Adriaan Peperzak (although he is generally fully booked as far as committees go, so don't count on Peperzak as your go-to guy).

I guess I should rephrase a tad - if you're interested in Ancient, Medieval, and hardcore analytic stuff, you should really check into the faculty list and make absolutely certain Loyola is right for you. If you're interested in religion, Hegel, Levinas, feminism, or medical ethics, you're definitely on the right track.

They will be making a new hire - they've been having job talks of late. A Jesuit and an Aristotle scholar are in the running as of the last time I checked. And they did make a recent hire, Diana Meyers, who has gotten some good mentions (I haven't taken her). They lost Patricia Huntington, who is BIG into Kierkegaard, and from my experience a pretty great instructor. They haven't really done anything to address this, nor does it look like they will with their upcoming hire.
