Value of Graduate Courses as an Undergrad?

Hey There Everbody,

 

     So around campus here there has been some talk about undergraduates taking graduate courses. I wanted to get your opinion on how valuable it is to take a graduate course while still as an undergrad? Should undergrads even take graduate classes?

If you want to learn what's taught in the course, and you meet the prereqs, then take the course! Graduate courses aren't that different from undergrad courses.

I think that depends on the discipline. My graduate courses are worlds different from even my upper-level undergrad courses.

I took several classes as an undergrad that were small seminars that had both grad and undergrad in them. The only difference was grad students had to write an 8-page paper at the end of the semester in addition to the weekly writings. These classes were what convinced me to pursue graduate study. I would highly recommend taking them because if you perform well in them, your professor will be able to write about that in a letter of recommendation

Personally, I think some of the upper division undergrad classes are more difficult than the graduate level courses. The undergrad classes require more busy work and exams compared to the grad courses which just have you write papers.

I suppose it depends on the professor. My upper division undergrad courses were all writing, thankfully.

If I walked into a history graduate class that was taught like an undergraduate history class I'd do my damnedest to get out of there immediately.
