traumerei Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 Are MIAs/MPAs pretty much reduced to DC and New York for jobs? Any stories from someone who's worked in a related field and in a different area? As for the reason behind the question, I'm in a committed relationship and might have to face that we'll have to be in not DC/NY.
flyingjellyfish Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 I work in California government and have seen several people come back to California after getting particulary MPA's and MPP's on the East Coast. Personally I'm considering coming back eventually, perhaps to work in SF, and will be keeping contact with my networks here with that in mind. I would say that NY and DC are good places to be for public and intl affairs, but that doesn't mean there aren't opportunities elsewhere.
Howie Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 According to a google search, 84% of federal jobs are located outside DC.
hlove Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 Depends which branch of the government you want to work in. If you go the DOD route, jobs are pretty much everywhere, well at least everywhere the American military is, which is pretty much every state and numerous countries.
NGP Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 Monitor 360 is in SF, but that's pretty much it, I think, if you've studied international affairs. Maybe Acumen Fund has an office out there?
mrgreen102 Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 I think that international affairs degrees and public administration degrees are pretty versatile. For international affairs, it really depends on your concentration. If you are focusing on security and diplomacy, then you are mostly limited to D.C. But if you take the economic approach, you can get into political risk analysis and maybe even consulting. Those jobs are everywhere. You can use a public administration degree anywhere. The Asia Foundation is in San Francisco.
dyavrom Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 would like to bump this to hear any more thoughts...similarly im from California going to SAIS. curious about the sorts of opportunities available on the west coast.
mrgreen102 Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 California think tanks: http://think-tanks.findthedata.org/d/s/California You could also work for Boeing or a defense contractor in Washington state.
rudy2012 Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 I am from CA and have been up in Northern CA since Nov and looking for a job in the IR/think-tanks/security/policy sector. I had a very, very hard time finding even any openings or organizations who do that kind of thing, although my experience would make me mostly entry-level-ish (BA with 2 yrs of professional work exp). I would like to think there are more opportunities at think-tanks/for IR grads here if you have a masters or advanced experience, but I am not sure. I am now moving to DC since it seems mostly everything is centered in that area.
state_school'12 Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 84% of the Federal jobs you'd want with MPP are not outside of DC. For sure.
lacanadiense Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 My question would be what kinds of jobs comprise that 84%? I truly don't know. Also, do those who get highish-level jobs outside of DC often have experience in the District?
carpecc Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Most MIA and MPA programs have employment outcomes with employment by location. Many go to DC, but plenty go other places. I'm moving to Myanmar for example.
